Hidden Gems: Meet Kelvin Demps of Club SciKidz Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelvin Demps.

Hi Kelvin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I graduated with his B.S. in Nutrition & Food Sciences with minor concentrations in Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology from Georgia Southern University in May 2012. Before investing in the education and care of Austin’s future scientists, I worked at the United States Department of Agriculture from 2013 to 2022. After a trip home to visit family and friends, I came backed to Austin and noticed there were not many programs for kids. I wanted to help fix that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not at all. From finding funding, to finding the right locations, to the planning of multiple events at once, and actually having the events, it has been a test of every ounce of strength I’ve ever had but, every time a kid hugs me and tells me they now love science, it all becomes worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As someone with ADHD, diagnosed with both child and adult forms, I have always had an extremely wide set of interests but, the one through line is that science has always helped me understand everything I’ve ever been interested in. Even as a young child, I would take a very scientific approach to finding out new things and trying to learn new skills. Whether it was wanting to be an astronaut or pop star, I knew science could get me there.
