Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Cox.
Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been thrifting since I was a kid and it has always felt like a mix of treasure hunting and cultural archeology. A few years back my mom started selling on eBay and that sparked the idea for Blaine and me to turn our shared love of vintage into something more.
That is how Coachwhip Provisions came to life. It is a mashup of our passion for the old, the odd and our shared nostalgia with my design outlet. These days you can spot us at Side Kitsch Vintage, Sassy Threads, and popup market around Austin. For us it is never just about selling things. It is about curating sparks of joy that bring back memories and help people see beauty hiding in the unexpected.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting an LLC can feel like learning a foreign language and taxes are just as confusing. A lot of it has been learning on the fly, asking friends who know a little more than we do, and figuring things out the hard way.
We have failed, changed course, and tried again more than once. But that is part of what makes Coachwhip what it is. The bumps in the road have taught us as much as the wins, and we are still learning every day.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Coachwhip Provisions is all about vintage and handmade goods with a playful, nostalgic, Texas-weird vibe. We dig up housewares, folk art, clothing, and accessories, and mix it with our own handmade creations; mostly wood pieces and funky clothes.
We want readers to know that Coachwhip is more than a shop. It is a celebration of finding joy in the unexpected, whether that’s a folk art piece that feels like home or a one-of-a-kind shirt that makes you laugh. Looking ahead, we’re excited to grow into more events, weirder clothes, and even furniture.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One of our secret weapons is Estatesales.net. It helps us track down estate sales and has probably led us to more Austin driveways and living rooms than we can count.
And honestly, old local cookbooks keep us going too. They are quirky, heartfelt, and remind us that doing your best in life is a lot like cooking — sometimes you follow the recipe, sometimes you improvise, and either way you end up with a story worth sharing.
