Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Strong of Pretty Thai

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Strong.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m still waiting for the smooth portion. We’ve overcome the loss of our son in the first year of being in retail. We’ve been rejected by several retailers (over and over again). We’ve worked and failed with a half dozen manufacturers, one of which caused us two FDA recalls. There is so much more that could be said, but I feel it is best suited for a conversation vs. a written report.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

We’re a chef crafted line of Thai Sauces and Spices that originated from our food truck in South Austin. My wife and I founded the business after meeting on a food truck for SXSW and realizing we were attending the same culinary school. I was inspired by a trip to Thailand during my second deployment to Fallujah, and after leaving my career with the military, I moved to Austin, ultimately making my way to Culinary School. I am proud of the products we create. We stay true to our principles and create true chef crafted sauces free from all fake ingredients. I am also proud of my ability to stay with the brand despite our personal tragedies. We are trying to build the brand in honor of our son and build a legacy in his name. We are also trying to build a non profit, which we support through our brand. We are genuine, honest people who believe strongly in integrity and serving, while providing high quality products to people in hopes that they can bring them together the way food brought my wife and I together.

What makes you happy?
The thought that I’ll be able to build the brand and have the means to build our foundation and fulfill the promises I made to my son. This brings me the most happiness. In the process, I know I’ll be able to provide a positive influence on my children and help others.
