Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Lubbers.
Hi Alyssa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Alyssa, and my Husband’s name is Marcus. We’re originally from Michigan, where we both grew up boating on the Great Lakes. Being on the water has always been a huge part of our lives, and when we moved to Austin about two years ago, we quickly fell in love with the boating culture here on Lake Travis.
Although we both currently work in tech, we realized we wanted to build something that aligned more closely with our passions and the lifestyle we truly value. That’s what inspired us to start our boat rental business. For us, boating has always represented freedom, adventure, connection, and living fully in the moment. We wanted to create experiences that help other people feel that too, and we believe Lost Anchor achieves that.
Our slogan, ‘Lose the Anchor, Find Your Freedom,’ reflects the deeper meaning behind our business. We believe that in life, ‘anchors’ are often the things that hold us back, whether that’s fear, routine, or staying stuck in something that no longer fulfills you. Just like a boat moves freely once the anchor is lifted, we believe amazing things can happen when you let go of what’s weighing you down and pursue what truly excites you.
When we’re not working, you can usually find us out on Lake Travis with our two rescue dogs, Mia and Sailor. Boating has become such a meaningful part of our lifestyle, and we love being able to share that experience with others.
This business is more than just renting boats to us, it’s about sharing our love for the water, creating unforgettable memories for people, and hopefully inspiring others to chase the life and passions they’ve been dreaming about.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but we’ve learned so much through the challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been balancing building a business while both working full-time jobs. There have been a lot of late nights, early mornings, and weekends spent figuring things out behind the scenes while still managing our careers.
Another challenge has been breaking into an industry where there are already several well-established boat rental companies on Lake Travis. Building brand awareness, earning trust, and attracting clients as a newer business has taken a lot of persistence and creativity.
At the same time, those challenges have pushed us to focus on what makes us different, creating a more personal, experience-driven brand centered around freedom, connection, and our genuine love for boating. Every customer, referral, and positive review means so much to us because we’ve truly built this from the ground up.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lost Anchor Boat Rentals. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our business is all about creating memorable experiences on the water and helping people enjoy the freedom and fun that boating brings. We offer boat rental experiences on Lake Travis that are designed to feel personal, laid-back, and welcoming – whether someone is celebrating a special occasion or simply wanting to unplug and spend a great day with friends and family.
What sets us apart is that this business was built from genuine passion and lifestyle, not just from seeing a market opportunity. Boating has always been a huge part of our lives, so every experience we create is rooted in what we personally love about being out on the water: adventure, connection, relaxation, and making memories with the people around you.
As a newer, small business, we also pride ourselves on creating a more personal experience for our customers. We truly care about the details, the customer experience, and building real relationships with the people who support us. We want guests to feel like they’re boating with friends, not just booking through a large company.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the message behind our name and slogan, ‘Lose the Anchor, Find Your Freedom.’ For us, it’s more than just boating, it’s about encouraging people to let go of what’s holding them back and make time for the experiences, people, and passions that make them feel alive. We hope our brand inspires people to slow down, enjoy life a little more, and create moments they’ll never forget.
We also love being active in the Lake Travis community and sharing this lifestyle with others. Lake Travis is a beautiful lake and it has so much to offer. At the end of the day, we want people to leave not only with great memories from the lake, but with a feeling of freedom, adventure, and connection that stays with them long after the day is over.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has played both a good and bad role in our business. Getting clients and bookings has been the hardest part of growing Lost Anchor. Social media has helped us connect with people and build awareness for our brand, but honestly, a lot of our bookings have come through boating apps, referrals, and simple word of mouth.
We’ve been really fortunate to have customers who enjoyed their experience enough to recommend us to friends and family, because those personal recommendations have been incredibly valuable as a newer business trying to grow on Lake Travis. We’ve also been lucky to build some amazing local partnerships that have helped support our growth and connect us with the community. Since we both coach at F45 Training, they’ve been a great partner for us, and I also coach at Rumble Boxing, which has created another awesome community connection. We’ve also built a great partnership with Big Hat Spirits, and collaborations like these have played a huge role in helping us grow our brand organically. We’ve also had moments where the right person found us at the right time, whether through a social media post, an app listing, a flyer, or simply hearing about us from someone else.
At the same time, we believe luck tends to meet people who are willing to keep showing up consistently. Building a business while working full-time jobs hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve stayed committed, continued learning, and kept putting ourselves out there. Every booking, connection, and positive review has helped build momentum for us, and we’re really grateful for that.
