Inspiring Conversations with Claudia Miller of Alpin Delights LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Miller.

Hi Claudia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story really began in my aunt Irma’s kitchen in Austria. She was an incredible cook and baker, and as a child I loved spending time with her while she prepared meals and desserts. I remember standing next to her, watching how she measured ingredients, kneaded dough, and pulled beautiful pastries out of the oven. The kitchen always smelled amazing, and everything was made with so much care. That’s where my love for baking started, and those moments with her sparked something in me that never went away.

I’m Claudia Miller, an Austrian pastry chef with more than 20 years of experience and the founder of Alpin Delights. Today I create custom cakes for celebrations and traditional Austrian pastries, especially strudels. Baking has been my passion since childhood, inspired by the rich traditions of Austrian pastry-making. In Austria, cakes and pastries are not just desserts—they are part of everyday life and part of gathering with family and friends.

I later trained as a pastry chef and had the opportunity to hone my craft in five-star hotels and one of Vienna’s most historic cafés. Working in those kitchens taught me the precision, techniques, and respect for tradition that define classic Viennese desserts. It was there that I truly learned the art of creating pastries that are elegant, balanced, and never overly sweet.

Life eventually brought me across the ocean. My husband, who is American, and I share a deep love for the Alps. We even said our vows on the Hochkönig mountain in Salzburg during a magical winter wedding surrounded by snow. That love for the Alps also inspired the name of my business, Alpin Delights. Today we call Austin, Texas home, where we live with our wonderful little boy.

When I started baking here, I realized that many cakes in the U.S. are much sweeter and heavier than what I grew up with. That inspired me to start Alpin Delights and bring a little piece of Austrian pastry tradition to Texas—cakes that are light, fluffy, and balanced in flavor, made with delicate cream fillings instead of the heavy buttercream frosting that is often used here.

Today, I create custom cakes for birthdays, baby showers, anniversaries, and many other celebrations. I love working with clients to design cakes around their themes, colors, and ideas, and turning those ideas into something both beautiful and delicious. Being part of someone’s celebration and helping create a centerpiece for their special day is something I truly enjoy.

What makes this journey especially meaningful to me are the stories my customers share. Many people tell me they grew up with a German or Austrian grandmother or grandfather who used to bake for them when they were little—things like apple strudel or traditional pastries. When they try my apple strudel, they often say the smell alone brings them right back to their childhood kitchen.

Some customers send me messages telling me it reminds them of their grandmother’s baking or family holidays from years ago. Hearing those stories means a lot to me. Knowing that something I baked can bring back memories, emotions, and moments from someone’s childhood is incredibly special.

For me, baking isn’t just about making desserts—it’s about sharing traditions, bringing back memories, and creating moments where people gather around the table and enjoy something made with care.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is never completely smooth, and for me there was an additional challenge: learning how everything works in a new country. Before I even registered my LLC, I decided to take a six-month business class to understand how starting and running a business works in the United States.

Coming from Austria, many things were completely new to me. I had to learn how to register a business, handle accounting, understand local regulations, and navigate the whole process of setting up a small company in the U.S. The class helped me understand many of these steps and gave me the confidence to move forward.

Another big part of the journey was building my website. I spent a lot of time learning how to design it myself and creating systems and automations that make ordering as easy as possible for my customers. It was definitely a learning curve, but I wanted the experience to feel simple and professional for people who order from me.

At the same time, I was doing all of this with my little son at home. Most of the time I could only work on the business when he was sleeping, so many late evenings and quiet nap times became my time to learn, build the website, and put everything in place.

I was very lucky to have support along the way, especially from my husband, who helped me understand many of the practical aspects of running a business here. Starting something new in a different country can feel overwhelming at times, but it also pushed me to learn new skills and grow in ways I didn’t expect.

Looking back, those challenges were an important part of the journey. They helped me build not just a bakery business, but a strong foundation for something I hope will continue to grow in the future. In many ways, the process of building Alpin Delights has been a journey of learning, patience, and passion.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Alpin Delights LLC?
At Alpin Delights, I bring a piece of Austrian pastry tradition to Austin. I create custom cakes for celebrations and bake classic Austrian pastries, especially traditional strudels, inspired by the techniques and baking culture I grew up with in Austria.

My background is rooted in European pastry training, where the focus is on quality ingredients, careful technique, and desserts that are balanced in flavor rather than overly sweet. Many cakes in the United States are quite sweet and heavy, often with thick layers of buttercream frosting. I use light and fluffy cream fillings and only a thin layer of buttercream for decoration and structure, which gives the cakes a more balanced taste while still looking beautiful.

Custom cakes are a big part of what I do. I love working with families to design cakes for birthdays, baby showers, and other celebrations. Many of my cakes are inspired by themes, colors, or special ideas that customers bring to me, and I enjoy turning those ideas into something that becomes the centerpiece of their event.

One of the pastries that has become especially meaningful to my business is my apple strudel. It’s a very traditional Austrian dessert, and many of my customers have a personal connection to it. Some grew up with German or Austrian grandparents who used to bake strudel for them when they were young. When they taste mine, they often say the smell alone brings them right back to those childhood memories. Hearing those stories is incredibly special to me and reminds me how powerful food and tradition can be.

What I’m most proud of with Alpin Delights is bringing a small piece of Austrian baking culture to the Austin community. Everything is made with care and traditional techniques, and my goal is always to create desserts that feel both beautiful and meaningful for the people celebrating around them.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
One of the most important qualities behind my business is customer service. I have very high standards when it comes to how I communicate with and support my customers. When someone reaches out about a cake for a special occasion, I want them to feel taken care of from the very first message.

I always try to respond quickly so that no one has to wait long for an answer. I also know that people are very busy, especially when they are planning celebrations while managing work and family life. Because of that, I try to make the entire ordering process as simple and efficient as possible. My goal is to respect my customers’ time while still helping them create the perfect cake.

I spend time understanding what they are looking for—the theme, the occasion, and their ideas—so that we can find the best solution together. For me, it’s not about selling the most expensive cake, but about creating the right cake for that celebration.

I’ve also worked hard to make the ordering and payment process easy. Once everything is confirmed, customers receive a simple link where they can securely pay by credit card with just a few clicks. Many people appreciate how smooth and straightforward the process is.

At the end of the day, I want ordering a cake to feel easy, enjoyable, and personal. Seeing how happy people are when they pick up their cake or hearing that it made their celebration special is incredibly rewarding.
