Inspiring Conversations with Edith Paul of Prickly Pop Parties

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edith Paul.

Hi Edith, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Every summer, my family visits my cousins in Seattle, and our trip always lands on my cousin’s birthday. When I was 10, my aunt bought a lot of decorations for the party. I’ve always loved crafts, so I started playing with the balloons and experimenting to see what I could make.

After I decorated for my cousin’s birthday, I had so much fun that I didn’t want to stop. For the rest of our trip, I kept covering my aunt and uncle’s house in balloons!

When we got back to Austin, it was my friend’s birthday, so I made her a balloon garland and a balloon tower. Then friends and family started hearing about it and asking me to make balloons for their parties too. Before I knew it, my hobby had turned into a real business. Now I’m 11, and Prickly Pop Parties has been in business for over a year!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges is being taken seriously as a kid. Some people are surprised when they find out Prickly Pop is run by a kid! But once they see examples of my work, they forget about my age. My mom has run businesses before, so she helps with client emails, quotes, and outreach, and makes sure everything goes smoothly. I focus on the creative part: designing and building the balloons.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Prickly Pop Parties?
Prickly Pop makes custom balloon decor for all kinds of celebrations. We do balloon garlands, arches, towers, walls, centerpieces, and backdrops, plus custom balloon shapes. I’ve made a giant pencil for a back-to-school party, a caterpillar for a first birthday, a baseball bat, a star arch for a Make-A-Wish gala, and a bubbling Halloween cauldron.

We decorate for birthdays, first birthdays, sweet sixteens, graduations, school events, team parties, businesses, and fundraisers all around Austin. Every design is custom. People tell me their theme or colors, and I turn it into something one-of-a-kind. We deliver and set everything up, so families can just enjoy the party!

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mom definitely deserves credit! She has run businesses before, so she teaches me how the business side works. She also drives me and all the balloons to every event, and helps me set up.
