Today we’d like to introduce you to James Mako.
Hi james, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Really just happened to realize after losing my job I in a position to chase my dreams and become a business owner or somehow just make a living doing what I love. I struggled for a while trying to soul search and one day I went to a drift event and got a drift ride. It had been almost ten years since I was in a drift car, and it just really hit me hard. I have always loved drifting since I was in high school and the one ride reminded me about it. I live in Austin Texas, and they haven’t had a drift community or drift program, and a few guys told me it was impossible to do but with God all things are possible, and I took the Dream and ran with it. 6 weeks after that drift ride I got my chance at a local car show to have drifting and give rides to spectators. This car show I had gone to over 10 years ago when I came to Austin, so it was kind of a full circle moment. After the car show I made my mark and began to build this community with the values i carry and we become something special and now I live a dream working at a new track built for drifting and continuing to have events all year long. This drift community is built on helping each other and having each other’s backs. We invite new drivers in, and everyone gathers around to help. We hang out outside of events. Our group chat is like a family. Growing up on an island where I learned a lot of this from to see it grow into my drift program is just wild. Our program is called Dreamers of Drift and We are Dreamers! This weekend coming up will be our 3-year mark and we are still doing rides for the same car show and still chasing our Dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has not been a smooth road at all. I have had to grow in so many ways starting this Dream. Ive been told to get a job and quit and always felt like no one believed in me about my goals with Drifting, I still struggle trying to grow and become one of the coolest grass roots drifting programs in the county. We just want to have fun, but this takes endless days and tons of hard work I had no idea was coming my way. Not only the business side of learning structure and how to run it I had tons of personal life happening in the background. Only reason I am still here and pushing forward is my faith in GOD to overcome this speed bumps and keep going all in. I never know if it will work or if it will, but I love trying and trusting it will.

Dreamers of Drift is a Austin local drift community in Texas. We started about 3 years ago building this program and now are one leading grassroots organization in Texas, so Ive heard.
We host drift events in Austin and welcome new drivers to come and learn and invite into our family.
We are known for fun and unity between drivers who are constantly chatting every day in our group chat, helping each other with problems and hanging out building relationships outside of drift events. Very proud to say we have grown so much over the years and now have our own Drift track at Cams Training facility who has let us have our events there and a place we call home. With Dreamers of Drift, we offer a family vibe along with drivers wanting to see each other progress in skills and car builds. We have some drivers who own machinic shops, wrap shops, tire suppliers and many more who help grown the community and have been a huge part of Dreamers growing
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Push your brand and don’t think you can’t try something new for promoting. I have always loved going to local car meets and being able to just meet and greet random people is the best! Stay true to what you love and let it grow from there.
