Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Buck
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have owned a small business, Sunless Rae, for over 6 years and while being a business owner I didn’t have very many resources around me to go to or listen to for relatable support. I am a service provider, working for myself and it can be a very lonely experience. I was listening to podcasts interviewing entrepreneurs that were already millionaires or it didn’t include the struggles they went through and I wanted to hear from people who haven’t made their millions yet, the struggles they are going through and have went through. I wanted a podcast that women could listen to and feel inspired, could relate to who they are listening to and really feel like they could start a business tomorrow. I started my podcast, Don’t Call Me Girl Boss, in August of 2020, I recorded a solo episode explaining in detail my entrepreneur journey. Since then, I have recorded 28 episodes which include interviews from women small business owners, business tips, information about the PPP loan and other COVID relief programs. I have a new episode every Sunday with a new guest who shares her story, struggles, milestones, strategies, tips and future plans.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No business is a smooth road, and my podcast is no exception. A struggle I have with my podcast is making sure the sound is crystal clear. I have had to invest in a new equipment, record when my son is sleeping so you don’t hear him in the background and have reliable internet on my side and who I am interviewing. I do all my interviews remotely so having the correct programs, equipment and internet connection is crucial to a good podcast. Another struggle I have had is guests flaking on me when I have them scheduled that week to be interviewed, when this happens, I make a solo episode or I try to find a new guest to come on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I also own my own business, Sunless Rae, I provide mobile spray tans in Austin, TX and have a salon in Orange County, CA. I have been a spray tan artist for 6+ years and came out with my own non-toxic self-tan mousse kit during the pandemic. I am right now in the process of opening a salon in Austin, TX, which I am super excited about.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by having financial freedom and happiness. Financial freedom allows me to determine how much I make and when I make it. There is no one caping me out at a certain salary or telling me I need to be in the office from 9AM – 5PM. This also contributes to my overall happiness, I am at my happiest when I can control my day, finances and be there for my son.
