Hi JK, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I was surrounded by creativity & craftsmanship. My dad was a home builder & cabinet maker, while my mom has always had a natural artistic ability, so I believe the foundation for a career in design was instilled in me from an early age. Although those influences shaped my interests, it was an advisor at Texas A&M University who encouraged me to pursue a degree in architecture – a decision that ultimately set the course for my career. After spending 23 years in the corporate design world, I felt it was time to take a leap of faith & build something of my own. Like many people during the COVID-19 era, I embraced a new chapter & founded Plan & Simple, offering drafting & design services for home builders & private clients. While I brought decades of design experience with me, entrepreneurship came with an entirely new set of challenges. Learning the ins & outs of running a business – from bookkeeping & taxes to contracts & client administration – was a rewarding education in itself. Looking back, every lesson helped shape the business I have today.
One of the biggest affirmations came during my first year in business when I had the opportunity to work on more than 17 projects. It confirmed that I was on the right path. What began with custom home design has grown into a full range of services, including spec home design for builders and developers, as-built drawings, remodel design, conceptual planning, photorealistic renderings, and construction documents. More importantly, it has reinforced my passion for creating thoughtful, functional spaces that truly serve the people who live in them.
At Plan & Simple, people always come first. Every project begins with understanding how my clients live – their family, hobbies, pets, entertaining style, and everyday routines – because I believe a house should first and foremost feel like home. I also believe every square foot should have a purpose, creating spaces that are both beautiful and highly functional. I find tremendous joy in helping builders and homeowners bring their vision to life, simplifying what can often feel like an overwhelming process, and serving as a trusted guide from concept to construction. At Plan & Simple, we collaborate closely with builders and private clients to craft spaces that truly reflect their vision & needs because we believe “simplified design inspires better living.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This may have been covered in my last answer 🙂 but I would say learning the ins and outs of building/running a business. The admin and “behind the scenes” work was (and still is) a huge learning experience for me, personally. Building a business as a woman in a commonly predominate “male-led” industry shares its challenges at times, for sure. Overcoming those obstacles has brought peace.
