Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Byers
Hi Jordyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story with Black Girl Austin began when I first moved to Austin for work. I struggled to find my community and felt a bit lost in this new city. But as I started branching out, developing friendships, and exploring Austin, I realized I was creating experiences that felt unique and different from what I’d heard from others.
Eventually, I decided to share my journey on TikTok, starting a series that showcased my life in Austin as a Black woman. To my surprise, my very first post on this topic went viral, sparking a flood of responses from women all over the Austin area who wanted to know how they could make the most of their Austin experience and connect with others. One commenter even suggested creating a group to help build those connections. Though I was initially hesitant, I made a GroupMe, sitting on it for about two weeks before sharing it, thinking no one would join. But I quickly realized that wasn’t the case—women from all over Austin began joining.
Within a few weeks, we organized our first happy hour with about 150 members, which, thanks to partnerships with other local organizations, became a huge hit. From there, we kept the momentum going, planning more events where women could connect, build friendships, and enjoy the city together. Now, two years strong, Black Girl Austin has grown into a thriving community with over 1,500 members and an active social presence.
Throughout these two years, we’ve hosted all kinds of events: movie premieres, block parties, happy hours, wine tours, and our annual Galentine’s Day Brunch, which has become my favorite event each year. Leading this community has been a true pleasure, and as we continue to grow, so does our impact. Most recently, we hosted a charity Halloween party with We The People, where we combined fun with purpose by donating all proceeds to support Austin’s homeless and food-insecure populations.
Black Girl Austin has become a place where women feel seen, connected, and celebrated, and I’m excited to see how it continues to evolve.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building Black Girl Austin hasn’t been easy by any standard. Starting this group and watching it blow up so quickly was exhilarating but overwhelming. I struggled to find my footing and figure out how to host events with limited capital. Initially, businesses were hesitant to partner with us due to our lack of a track record and budget. Our success has come through collaborations with those who recognized our potential and were willing to take a chance on us.
Another challenge has been balancing quality experiences with logistical planning, especially as we grow. It’s crucial to ensure that every member feels included and supported in this community, which is at the heart of what we do.
The best part of this journey is the amazing women who have come together to make a difference. Their support has been invaluable, helping us push through challenges and continue to thrive. I’m incredibly thankful for our community and the impact we’re creating together.
We’ve been impressed with Black Girl Austin, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Black Girl Austin (BGA) is more than just a social group; it’s a movement dedicated to creating positive change and inclusivity in Austin. Our mission is all about fostering a safe space for Black women in the Austin Metro Area to find community, engage locally, and build a strong presence in the city.
We host a variety of events that not only help women connect but also make a real impact in our community. Austin is always changing, with new people coming in and out, which gives our members the chance to leave the city better than they found it—making it a more inclusive place for everyone.

I’m most proud of the relationships I see building every day as a result of BGA. It’s amazing to witness women coming together, supporting one another, and creating lasting connections.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Honestly, what matters most to me is connecting people. I did a StrengthsFinder assessment a while back and discovered that one of my strengths is connecting others. I find myself constantly searching for ways to do that in my life, often without even trying.
It’s become a passion of mine, and it deepens my love for the people in my life. I genuinely enjoy listening to them and doing whatever I can to connect them with the right individuals who can help propel them forward.
In addition to my love for connection, I have a strong passion for knowledge. I’m always searching for new things to learn so I can apply them in different areas of my life. Seeing those connections flourish and witnessing the positive impact they have on others is incredibly fulfilling and reinforces my commitment to building community through Black Girl Austin.
