Inspiring Conversations with Nadiya Zhurba of Bright Kids Ukrainian Online School

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadiya Zhurba.

Nadiya Zhurba

Hi Nadiya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from Ukraine and moved to Austin 7 years ago because of my husband’s work. I used to work as a teacher in Ukraine, and I always did my best to preserve the Ukrainian language for my kids in an English-speaking environment. So when COVID started, my kids couldn’t meet their Ukrainian-speaking friends, so I organized online classes with their peers and teachers in Ukraine. This is how I founded my school. Now, when Russia started the war in Ukraine, killing Ukrainians and destroying Ukrainian culture, – this school is even more important because it spreads the Ukrainian language and gives jobs to people living in Ukraine.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting an online school, like any entrepreneurial venture, typically comes with its own set of challenges. Initially, I struggled with reaching the target audience in a competitive market and scaling the business while maintaining quality. But these are not so big struggles compared to those we are facing right now. When Russia targeted Ukrainian critical infrastructure, there were power outages, and extensive blackouts affected millions of people, leaving them without electricity, heating, and water. Our teachers can only hold online classes when there is electricity.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bright Kids Ukrainian Online School?
Bright Kids Ukrainian Online School is an online school where teachers in Ukraine teach the Ukrainian language to kids and adults in the USA and other countries. We offer private and group online classes to people with different levels of knowledge. For people who already know Ukrainian, we offer live online classes in Coding, Art, Chess, Improv, Voice, or other subjects in the Ukrainian language. I’m proud that thanks to my school, I can preserve the Ukrainian language abroad, give jobs to teachers in Ukraine, and support the Ukrainian economy, especially now that Russia has started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and wants to erase everything Ukrainian from the earth’s surface.

So, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you before we go? How can they support you?
I’m always grateful for spreading the word about our school. I feel blessed when parents of our students recommend us to their friends and acquaintances.
