Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Hamilton
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Sherry’s Journey of Passion and Purpose**
My story began in 2013, during my time working as a nurse. One day, a sudden inspiration struck me, urging me to become an American Heart Association (AHA) Instructor. I felt an undeniable calling to pursue this path, believing it would allow me to make a greater impact on people’s lives.
However, just three months into my journey, a personal tragedy occurred. A loved one suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in the presence of many family members. In the aftermath, my family turned to me, expressing their regret and helplessness, saying, “Sherry, I wish I could have done something more. I wish I knew CPR.” Their words and questions ignited a fire within me. I realized that I had found my true purpose: to empower others with the knowledge and skills to save lives.
In November 2022, I made the courageous decision to step away from my nursing career to fully dedicate myself to this passion and purpose. Though I had no clear plan on how to proceed, I took a leap of faith, trusting that my dedication would pave the way.
Receiving the keys to our training location on November 1, 2022, marked the beginning of an incredible journey. Since then, we have grown significantly. We have established ourselves as an AHA Training Site and a Health and Safety Institute Training Center. Additionally, we have earned the designation of a Department of Defense Educational Licensee. Our growth continues, and in June 2024, we will launch our newest service as a DOT and Non-DOT Drug Screening Site for pre-employment purposes.
Today, our team comprises six dedicated instructors, all committed to the mission of saving lives through education and training. Together, we strive to make a difference, ensuring that more people are equipped with the skills to respond in critical moments, because the life you save could be your your love one or mines.
My journey from a nurse to an AHA Instructor and beyond is a testament to the power of passion and purpose. It is my hope that by sharing my story, others will be inspired to follow their own paths of meaningful impact.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Transitioning from a career in nursing as a full-time LVN and organizing Women of Unity, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps women find and fulfill their purpose holistically, to working full-time on both my nonprofit and as an AHA Instructor while establishing our training center has been far from a smooth road. The journey has been filled with numerous challenges and obstacles that tested my resilience and determination.
One of the earliest struggles was coping with the personal tragedy that inspired my journey. Losing a loved one to cardiac arrest was a devastating experience, and processing that grief while channeling it into a constructive purpose was incredibly challenging. Additionally, I have seen many friends pass away due to cardiac arrest, which breaks my heart each time. It took a lot of emotional strength to turn such painful events into a driving force for my mission.
Financial uncertainty was another major hurdle. Leaving a stable nursing career to pursue my vision was a significant risk. I had to invest my own resources to get the training facility off the ground. There were many moments of concern wondering if I had made the right decision, but deep down I know I did. Glory to God!
Starting the training facility from scratch also presented logistical challenges. Securing the appropriate licenses, meeting regulatory requirements, and establishing ourselves as a recognized training site required a steep learning curve. Navigating the processes often feels overwhelming, but each step it with purpose..
Moreover, recruiting and training a team of instructors who shared my passion and vision can be a challenge. However, I was fortunate to have my son, SGGT Adrian Hamilton, joined my team as the Administrator. He has been God sent. We have taken our time to find instructors who are not only qualified but also deeply committed to our mission. I am proud to say that my team is great and has the heart for this work, just like I do. Ensuring consistent quality and fostering a collaborative environment is important to us.
Despite these struggles, each challenge has reinforced my resolve and deepened my commitment to our cause. Every obstacle we overcome makes me stronger and more capable. The road has not been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing the impact of our work, knowing that we are equipping people with the skills to save lives, makes every struggle worth it.
