We recently had the chance to connect with Jesus Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesus, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose track of time when venturing into a forest! There is something special about the warm Texas breeze that moves you through the wildflower meadows and into the old oak forest.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello from Tejas! I am Jesus Garcia, a school teacher, community educator, gardener and founder of the HerbalActionProject, a children’s herbalism education resource pod for home school parents and teachers.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I was taught by many elders in my youth, my grandparents were both stewards of the land and supported my journey. My grandmother showed me to be kind and protective like her spring roses while my grandfather taught me resiliency and patience by growing trees on hot Texas soil.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I feel as gardeners or farmers, we always want to give up when the fields don’t produce what you expect, but there is always an abundance waiting nest season. We forget that each season brings new opportunities to plant new seeds, new possibilities of growth.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
There are many people I admire who have influenced the way I view education and how I teach. That being said, my biggest admiration has always been Nature as a teacher; nature continues to show me, teach me and helps me to understand that there is a world so beautiful and unique, filled with magic who will never given up on you, because nature always shows up. Nature may change from time to time, but nature is my best friend.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m teaching little ones. As I gravitate towards more of a grounding energy, it’s only natural that creating school gardens and seeing the kids become their own little herbalist and gardens brings a wonderful zen experience.
