We’re looking forward to introducing you to Julie Frost. Check out our conversation below.
Julie, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Most of my day is filled with emails, calls, and boring administrative tasks, but there are some days that require more hands-on work like facilitating donations, producing events, supervising rehearsals, etc. It takes a lot of focus, planning, and self-discipline to be your own boss, but you also have the freedom to work when and where you want and who with.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
By day, I run a music management and consultant business that covers everything from artist development & management to production, PR, and booking. But my passion project has been a music charity I started in 2012 and continue to volunteer with – the Music Moves Mountains Foundation, which is a non-profit organization whose mission is to make music therapy, music education, and community outreach more accessible to those in need. I started the Foundation with the inspiration from my son, who is a drummer and deals with various disabilities. Our goal was to help others who could benefit from the power of music, and here we are 13 years later still spreading the love.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I traveled abroad after college, it was a big wake-up call as to how isolated Americans are as far as how we all view the rest of the world. Meeting others who didn’t share the same land, language, and customs forced me to get outside of my comfort zone. Being immersed in other countries and cultures opened my mind to so much and broadened my thinking. It also made me realize how much we share in common as humans despite our differences.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I think the biggest take away from failure is learning that it is only part of the process. You cannot succeed without it. And success should only be defined by you – not anyone else.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Compassion and acceptance. Since I was a kid, I was driven to make sure everyone felt seen and heard – as they are. Now as a parent of a kid who struggles with so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to me to meet people where they’re at. Every single human has a purpose in this world and should be treated with love and kindness.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I did my best to contribute to making the world a better place. I hope that my legacy will live on in my son and his music, and the community that I tried to make an impact on. And that I lived my life with adventure, passion, humor, love and humility!
