Kristin McKenzie Rice shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kristin , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Being a Mom of 3 kids ages 5 and under, my day to day life is unpredictable! We homeschool for pre-school and kindergarten plus are part of a co-op for extracurriculars and my husband coaches so our days are full of school, sports, errands, and doing everything as a family unit!
I still work part time in content creation, TV, & Film, but these days I keep my children with me for almost every job I take which is such a blessing to be able to do and my kids love working in Film as well.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an actress, author, and content creator, plus run a photo/ video booth business alongside my husband who is an Assistant Athletic Director/ Coach. My husband also occasionally works with me for Commercial or Film work since my kids are all in the industry and often a Dad is needed for the shoots.
As of lately our life has consisted of many DIY projects as well as endless dance parties in the kitchen, trial and error out in the garden, and little tiny hands “helping” with everything we do.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I would say my Mother is who taught me the most about work and an exceptional work ethic at that. Growing up she was a stay at home mom all while going back to school online to obtain a degree in Teaching so she could then work at the school my siblings and I all attended so she could have the same schedule as us and be present for every school event, sporting match up, theatrical performance, and special luncheons. Watching my Mom work so hard to provide a private education for 4 children (her entire paycheck was put towards school and extracurriculars) and watching her be so present during our most formative years is what has driven me to not only pursue my goals and dreams in life within the Film industry, but also to support my children as I don’t miss out on a single moment of their everyday life. Being a Mom was always something I strived for in part because I watched such a strong and selfless woman raise me.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I find myself not necessarily fearful, but at times second guessing when it comes to important decisions or advice I am giving. I have always been told I carry a spirit of discernment, however, growing up this was often mistaken as a sense of condemnation or judgement. It has taken well into adulthood for me to not constantly apologize before giving my opinions or answers when individuals come to me for advice. I have realized everyone has opinions, but the moment you give your faith based response, all of a sudden no one wants you in the conversation anymore unless profuse apologizing occurs and extended explanation. I am slowly realizing my faith is not something to apologize for and not everyone has to find my opinions “fun, fare, positive”. I can speak in love and those around me will either accept it or they won’t, and that is ok!
I especially used to fear this within the TV/ Film industry; always second guessing how I would approach situations and how silent I had to sit during meetings or workshops. I am definitely a work in progress to live out my faith, but I feel as though what I lack in words, I walk in physicality. I strive to be an example and leader as I want my children to also grow up strong in their faith, morals, and opinions!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
These days I find myself walking about like a female Adam Sandler meme, so yes, I would in fact say my public self is my true self… all the spit up and nursing life has to offer with 3 shadows around me at all times!
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Since my children work in the industry with me I have started 3 different funds for each of them and their paychecks 100% go straight into these education, investment, and savings based accounts. My husband and I always find ourselves working in education and ministry or volunteering for things in our community, so I am fully aware that my kids need a strong financial future. I had to put myself through College and at 18 was on my own, as was my Husband, so once we got married and had endless amount of Student Loans to then pay off, we knew we wanted to make sure our kids were taken care of and through working together as a family we have been able to start the stepping stones to financial success at such young ages.
