Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jennifer Fisher of North Austin

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jennifer Fisher. Check out our conversation below.

Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I lay in bed and read The New York Times and cuddle with the dogs. Then once my daughter wakes up, I get her situated with a little wake up TV while I fix breakfast. Then we eat and go on walks with the dogs for the next hour.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jennifer Fisher, founder of J.Fisher Interiors, an AD-Approved luxury design firm in Austin. With nearly 20 years in the industry, I create soulful, personality-driven interiors that balance beauty with livability. My background in construction sets me apart, I know how to dream big while making sure every detail works in the real world. Since launching my studio in 2014, I’ve been shaping bespoke spaces across Austin and beyond that reflect each client’s story in a fresh, timeless way.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Bonds break when someone you trust abandons you in your most vulnerable moments. In my case, a close friend brought up something she said bothered her nine months earlier, but only did so in a veiled way on my birthday. By then, it wasn’t just about the original issue, it was about the silence, the delay, and ultimately the betrayal of not showing up when I needed her most. That ended our friendship and even shifted how I felt about others she pulled into it.

What restores bonds, when it’s possible, is the opposite: direct, honest, and timely communication. When people are willing to face hard conversations in the moment, with care and clarity, there’s space for healing. Without that, the distance becomes damage, and sometimes the damage can’t be undone.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell her, “You are tougher than you realize, and the life you dream about is possible, even if it doesn’t happen the way you pictured it.” There were moments I thought setbacks defined me, whether it was struggling to break into the design world without a formal degree, or facing the challenge of trying to start a family on my own. But every detour led me somewhere meaningful. I’d want her to know that her resilience will carry her through, and that the combination of grit and heart she already has is going to build something beautiful.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. The public version of me as a designer is absolutely real: the creativity, the eye for detail, the passion for making spaces soulful and personal, that’s all me. But it’s also curated. What people don’t always see are the harder layers, the exhaustion of being a single mom and running a business, the moments of self-doubt, the fear of failure, or the times I’ve been deeply hurt in my personal life. I think both versions are true. The difference is that the public me is somewhat polished, while the private me is rawer and more vulnerable. Over the years, I’ve tried to let those two versions overlap more, because I think authenticity is where the real connection happens.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was an honest, loyal, and trustworthy friend and a devoted mother and that the people in my life never doubted that I loved them. Beyond the projects and the recognition, that’s what really matters to me: that the people I cared about felt seen, supported, and deeply loved.
