Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kengo Hioki of Austin

We recently had the chance to connect with Kengo Hioki and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kengo, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
painting all day!!!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Peelander-Yellow.
I’m artist to create paintings. murals. designs and music to make you happeee!!!
I did over 65 murals in US and Japan and 1600 shows in US and Europe, Japan!!!
My artwork features cute yet slightly spooky monsters and animals, primarily in shades of yellow. I believe they will bring a touch of joy to your life.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I didn’t go to kindergarten; I stayed home and drew pictures all the time. I was afraid of people. Drawing was the most enjoyable thing for me.
It’s still the same now, but thanks to drawing, I’ve gained acceptance from others and have come to like people.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Creative jobs in music and art are very demanding. It’s difficult to succeed unless you persevere. Earning money, in particular, is not easy. I went through a long period of hardship, but fortunately, I enjoyed painting and playing in a band, which helped me get through it.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
This year marks the 28th anniversary of my band, Peelander-Z. In the beginning, the person I was on stage and the person I was in real life were two separate characters, but as we continued playing together, my stage persona and my true self merged. Now, they are essentially the same person. That makes things much easier.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’m not going to stop anything. I’m just going to continue doing what I’m doing now, enjoying it, expanding it, and giving it my all!
