We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matt O’connor. Check out our conversation below.
Matt, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
While the underlying service provided is laundry delivery, most people don’t understand how much technology powers the best-in-class quality of the service. From delivery algorithms, to AI analyzing images and videos of each order for quality control, every step of the process is influenced by technology.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We’re NoScrubs laundry delivery. We provide the fastest (with turnaround times in as little as four hours), most affordable (plans start at $1 a day) laundry delivery service that’s ever existed. What makes us special is that a) we can turn perfectly folded laundry orders around faster than doing the chore yourself and b) we have painstakingly built quality control to prevent any issues with orders before they’re returned. While food and grocery delivery have become ubiquitous, laundry delivery has never become mainstream because previous attempts are all dramatically slower than doing it yourself AND are much more expensive. NoScrubs is building the solution to make laundry a bygone chore.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work was the founder of the law firm where I had my first job out of college. Lloyd Constantine was a highly respected lawyer. Most experienced lawyers I’d worked with barely noticed paralegals. Lloyd treated every member of the team equally, which was exciting and empowering.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think most suffering has a large component of the fear of how things will be if a project/goal/etc doesn’t succeed. However, with lots of small failures along the way, I’ve realized that the worst case scenarios of not succeeding are never nearly as bad as I would have imagined. This alleviates a lot of the fear-based suffering for succeeding.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I very highly value honesty. There are so many times in both inconsequential and important interactions where it would feel easier in the moment to avoid the truth or to outright lie. I consider those the moral equivalent of high interest debt – it gives you short term liquidity but at a steep price in the long run.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes – I’m my own harshest critic so external praise doesn’t motivate me.
