Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Nathan Nordstrom of South Austin

Nathan Nordstrom shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wake up, get centered and make plans for the day. This year has been pretty slow for commission work so it has allowed me time to focus on the things that are more important to me than money and career, which is taking care of myself and spending quality time with family and friends.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nathan Nordstrom. I am an artist from Austin Texas. I started painting graffiti here in 1990. In 2004, I transitioned into doing art full time. These days I spend my time painting, doing commission work, teaching art for free, art shows, and traveling the world when I can.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Traveling has opened up my mind to other people and cultures. It taught me that we are all alike, even though we do have our differences. It showed me how fortunate we are to live in a country with opportunities. Traveling has given me a sense of gratitude and a new perspective on life. When I visit a new place, I always make a point to connect with the locals and paint with them. I don’t know if there is a “perfect” place but what it has shown me is that the world is one crazy, beautiful planet!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
One of biggest fears that I have experienced was that I couldn’t be an artist. I thought it was going to be too difficult ( it has been at times), that I wasn’t good enough, of what others would think, what they would say, etc. I’ve discovered that most of my fears are not real. They are made up. Yes, there’s real fear but behind that fear was my own insecurity. I was the one holding myself back. I took the leap of faith and I’ve continued to make art ever since.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Self improvement. I am the one who is responsible for my life. I hope to stay curious and teachable. Life is short and tomorrow isn’t promised. It’s up to me how I live my life today.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes. I got what I thought I wanted and I realized it wasn’t what I needed. I have learned that what I need is already inside of me, The journey is reaching and utilizing it.
