Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Spencer Welch of I’m north of Austin

We recently had the chance to connect with Spencer Welch and have shared our conversation below.

Spencer, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me includes waking up at about 6am, making a hot cup of tea, and sitting on the couch in the dark for a few minutes before it’s time to wake the kids for school. I drop off the two younger kids and spend the next couple of hours working on paintings and commissions while my oldest child does her homeschooling at the dining room table. We eat lunch, run errands, and do chores before it’s time to pick up the younger two kids from school! In the afternoon I try my best to be present with my kids, no work, just family time. Then it’s dinner time, a couple tv shows, a few books read to the kids; then off to bed!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Spencer, I am a painter and mom to three kids (two in public school and one homeschooling). I paint portraits and figurative works, mostly! I love to tell stories through my work, usually based in the mundane moments of real life. I love to paint in oil, it’s my favorite medium, but my works are often mixed media! I combine different techniques to bring an expressiveness to my semi-realistic paintings. I am a self-taught artist, learning by trial and error mostly. I teach art classes at our local homeschool co-op , which I absolutely love, allowing me to share the knowledge that I have worked so hard to gain.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband knew I was an artist before I did. I loved to draw and have been creating my whole life, but it never dawned on me that I was an actual artist. When he saw me drawing on day, he encouraged me to keep going, to make a business out of it. He still encourages me to this day. 11 years later.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. Actually, I still struggle with this. The life of an artist is difficult.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Of course, all versions of me are real. We don’t have to be exactly the same every moment of every day to be authentically ourselves.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell others that I was kind, generous, and encouraging. That I persevered and had faith in God and in myself, and that I never gave up on my dreams.
