We recently had the chance to connect with Valerie Tamez-Avila and have shared our conversation below.
Valerie, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently my teenager decided what career she is going to pursue. The fact that she is interested in going to college made me feel proud.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My husband and I run a cottage law micro bakery. We specialize in baking all our sweets and savories with organic white spelt. ( ancient grain easier to digest) Everything is made from scratch with organic and local ingredients. Menu includes organic white spelt loaf, Focaccia ,cinnamon rolls, fried fruit pies,, strawberry oat bars and Dark chocolate cake:
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My Grandfather , Gene Moody my mother’s father. When I was a child he owned a grocery store in San Benito Texas for many years. I remember staying with my grandparents during the summer and I would attend work with my grandfather. He taught me how to meet and great people and to be kind. I admired his dedication and hard work.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was scared as a child what would help me is journaling. I would write my thoughts and questions down.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Celebrating the Holidays with my husband and daughter is very important to me . We have traditions of decorating, cooking and other activities depending on the holiday.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
After feeding my family a nice home cooked meal. it always starts with a prayer of gratitude.
