Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaka Marchie
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been working as a marketing professional in media and entertainment for the last 4 years. My north star is to find ways to amplify talented artists, creators, and executives that put out quality work. More than anything, I love to understand why people think the way that they do, so I wanted to create a show where I get to do that while doing one of my favorite pastimes, coloring! Coloring is one of my favorite ways to practice mindfulness and unplug, but I always did it by myself. Coloring with my guests made the activity more fun, and I got to learn more about them in the process.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge is finding a sustainable schedule without burning myself out. I value high production quality, so that means Ubering after work for a few weeks and making time to research and apply for grants. That means building a mindful routine so I can deliver at my day job and build something of my own that I believe in at the same time. I want to always be working on my next episode, but I also learned that I need to allow room for life to happen, things to go wrong, and awesome opportunities to come along. Gotta take things a day at a time and plan accordingly.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I host a podcast called Colorful Theories. It’s a show where I have conversations over coloring books with creators. Think Hot Ones, but way less stressful. I’m most proud of the production quality and my team that helps me execute my ideas. We’re meant to be calm companions to listeners at the end of their day, or when they’re working on projects of their own. We recently hosted our first event, The Synesthesia Lounge, in partnership with Dream Con. It’s an IRL experience where people painted anime canvases from Kemmersive, spray-painted boards and water bottles from Didomi, and enjoyed sets from Texas DJs. Looking forward, I want to make more podcast episodes, host and moderate virtual and in-person panels, and continue to host The Synesthesia Lounge in partnership with other conventions and festivals in the future.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is definitely being in choir growing up. It made me fall in love with music. It taught me discipline. It gave me a strong sense of community. These are things I still carry with me, and I try to channel that energy into the things I pursue now.
