Life & Work with Beth Ebbing Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Ebbing Johnson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Beth’s love of nature came from growing up on her family farm. She spent her childhood walking the woods collecting treasures & talking to trees. At 26 she moved across the country to the desert of Phoenix, Arizona & discovered Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, SWIHA. There she studied Herbalism, Hypnotherapy, Aromatherapy, Reiki, Polarity, Astrology, Meditation, Nutrition & much more. She graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Holistic Healthcare with a specialty in Western Herbalism. She worked within the holistic healthcare field for Whole Foods Market, Independent Herb Shops, Dr. Hauschka Skincare, Herb Pharm, Nordic Natural, and many other herbal companies. After graduating SWIHA, she became their marketing director & assisted teaching in the herbal program she loved so much. She became an herbal educator for companies & trained their staffs at holistic stores and was a sales rep for several herbal companies. She’s been a guest teacher at herbal conferences over the years, Co-Founder of Moonflower Herb Fest in TX Hill Country & in 2022 started her own Sacred Moon Herbs Women’s Herbal Healing 3day Gatherings in TX Hill Country. Beth has experienced many diverse job titles within the herbal world, loves to grow herbal medicines, make medicines, teach others, create healing ceremonies, travel on herb trips, & train with as many mentors as possible. After almost a decade of working for others, the dream of creating & owning her very own herb shop came true. Sacred Moon Herbs came to birth on April 17th of 2012 in the heart of Dripping Springs TX. It is a healing oasis full of 200 organic teas, hundreds of herbal medicines for all ages, nontoxic body care, organic aromatherapy bar, holistic books, crystals, jewelry, tea tools & gifts for all walks of life. We offer a yearly April Texas Hill Country Plant Walk, Sunday Herbal Classes, Women’s Herbal Gatherings along with helping our wonderful customers Wednesday through Saturday 10-5pm. Hope you can visit Moon & feel all the love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge is never having enough time in the day to do all it takes in owning your own retail business. I have journals full of recipes, classes to write, new products to blend, labels to typeset, schedules to make, more herbal retreats & festivals to create & the ideas keep coming. I have 2 books in my head I want to write. All of these get put on the back burner because ordering herbs, unloading product boxes, pricing items & inventory takes priority, along with having the shop open weekly to be face to face with customers, paying the endless taxes & bills of having a brick & mortar, researching grants to help Moon exist, making our custom line of Sacred Moon Products, answering emails, posting social media daily & the other 100’s of pieces to running your own business. Another challenge is owning a small business in a world that is not set up to support us financially. It’s always a challenge to order as we cannot meet the amount that online shops & big box stores & they will always have a deeper discount than we can get. It’s not fair, but that’s how it is. So we make up it up in excellent customer service & knowledge & the years of experience in the holistic world. We create relationships with our customers. Some of which having been supporting us for 14 years now. We’ve watched their kids grow up & move away. We’ve been there for them as they have gone through chronic illnesses, losses of loved ones, & their lives have been turned upside down. So I would circle back around to saying the biggest challenges I have is needing more money and help to expand & where to put my time at since I’m one person & cannot do it all. That’s the tricky part because I wish there were 17 of me to do all I’d like to do with my herb shop & future retreat sites.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a herbalist for over 25 years now & love the plant path. I enjoy both teaching & learning more about the herbs & their endless ways they heal us little human beings. I love creating new products for our private custom line of Sacred Moon Herbs & then sharing how to make medicines in classes & herb festivals. I still enjoy working with the public after all these years. I like helping others find ways to heal themselves & create new rituals & habits to improve their nervous systems & anxiety. I appreciate the stories customers share & being able to bear witness for the traumas they have suffered & also the happiest days of their lives. Humans are complex & always searching for the “mores” & the “what ifs” in life. My working at the shop or teaching classes allows me to connect with customers that become very near & dear to me over the years. My work with the plants on all levels have not only made the life of customers, friends & family better, but my life fulfilling & a place of gratitude.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m a storyteller, so I could go on for days with stories of how the plants have heal others & myself. About how to blend a tea to taking a spiritual herbal bath to creating a daily ritual to heal yourself & allow stress to melt away. So many years of herbal travels, stories & healings that I’ve been grateful to witness 🙂
