Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Harrell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Pretty n Slayed Hair Salon is located in Round Rock, TX. I’m a licensed cosmetologist specializing in vivid color and natural hair. Pretty n slayed was a name I came up with for my Instagram page while I was in cosmetology school. It was cute and catchy to me, so I stuck with it and the name has continued to represent me as a person and a brand still today. I started cosmetology in such a random way because I had always worked in health care prior to this when I was in the army. After I got out, I was a stay-at-home mom for 8 years, and I was itching to get out of the house, but I needed a job that was completely flexible. Hair is ultimately what I decided to pursue because I was already doing hair for family and friends at times already. I wanted to take a shot at making it a career and it definitely worked up better than I could have imagined.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have always been a people person, so I was able to grow my business with my skills, social media, and great customer service. I got my license in Florida and was able to build a steady clientele there, but then we had to move due to my husband’s military orders. That’s how we ended up in Texas, which has been a great move for the family. However, it forced me to start from zero all over again with clients. Since I was in a new location where no one knew me, it took months before I built up a steady flow of people but I was able to do it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The thing I love to do the most in my salon is vivid colors. I absolutely love to be able to push the limits on what is normal and show someone how amazing they will look when they choose to stand out. Curly hair can look amazing in any color and you can do it without compromising the integrity of the hair when doing it correctly. I am always filming while working, so I have been able to share my work with millions of people through my social media platforms. In my videos I always show what colors I use, so I’m able to show anyone anywhere how to get the look themselves. What I’m most proud of are the amazing opportunities I’ve been able to experience because of my creativity. I’ve been able to work as a hairstylist for NYFW as well as style hair for editorial photo shoots. I have been able to attend some amazing TikTok creator events in several states and network with some amazing people. I was one of 100 finalists for the Houston BEYGOOD black parade route, and I am currently in cohort 5 of the Goldman Sachs Black in Business. I have been working very hard to grow my business and provide amazing color services and hairstyles to my clients.
