Life & Work with Daya Dai of Austin, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daya Dai

Hi Daya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started with my YouTube channel, where I uploaded covers of songs by my favorite artists. At first, it was just for fun—sharing my love for music with friends and family. Little did I know, they would become my very first fans, cheering me on with every new video. Pretty amazing, right? As much as they enjoyed my covers, one question kept coming up: “When will you make music of your own?”

Songwriting wasn’t something I had ever considered. I journaled, I wrote poetry, but turning my thoughts into lyrics and melodies? That was uncharted territory. Still, I was intrigued. Something inside me sparked, and I knew I had to embark on this journey.

Growing up, I was deeply inspired by artists like Ariana Grande, Aaliyah, and SZA—powerful voices that shaped my love for R&B and soul. I wanted to create music that resonated, that made people feel something real.

In 2020, I took the leap and released my first singles, Feelings and I Knew, followed by my debut EP, Bittersweet. Seeing my music connect with listeners was surreal and pushed me to keep creating. Since then, I’ve continued evolving my sound, consistently releasing new music, including my second EP, ILSYM, in July 2024.

Performing live was another turning point for me. Stepping on stage at Vulcan Gas Company and Cedar Street Courtyard during Austin MiniFest, I felt an instant rush—pure energy, purpose, and joy. That moment confirmed what I already knew: this is what I’m meant to do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As an artist, I’ve faced my share of challenges. One of the biggest was finding my unique sound and style—learning to create music that felt authentic to me rather than trying to fit into a specific mold. It took time, experimentation, and self-discovery to embrace the fact that my sound didn’t have to fit anyone’s expectations but my own.

Another challenge was finding a community of performers who share my passion for R&B. While the music scene is vast, connecting with like-minded artists who understand the genre and its depth wasn’t always easy. But through networking, performing, and putting myself out there, I’ve started to build relationships with artists who inspire and support me.

And, of course, there’s the pressure—pressure to succeed, to meet expectations, to constantly prove myself in an industry that can be tough. Pushing through the doubt and outside noise hasn’t always been easy, but staying true to my craft and remembering why I started keeps me going. Every obstacle has shaped me into the artist I am today, and I know the journey is just beginning.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Hey, I’m Daya Dai I’m a singer who’s completely fallen in love with R&B. My sound has been described as sweet, soulful, and glittery—a mix of emotion, melody, and vibes that feel like a warm embrace.

I wouldn’t say I’m “known” for anything just yet, but what sets me apart is my openness to explore and evolve. I don’t box myself into one style—I create what feels right in the moment. Music, to me, is all about feeling and connection, and I love experimenting with new sounds to keep that magic alive.

One of the things that has shaped me as an artist is the Austin nightlife and live music scene. There’s something exciting about performing under the city lights, surrounded by a crowd that just *gets* it. Whether it’s intimate venues or festival stages, Austin’s energy is unmatched—it pushes me to grow, take risks, and truly own my sound.

What I’m most proud of? Putting myself out there, meeting new people, and not being afraid to take risks. Whether it’s performing live for the first time, stepping into new creative spaces, finding my voice in a world full of noise, or collaborating with other talented artists, I keep pushing forward. This journey is all about growth, and I’m embracing every bit of it.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I haven’t found a mentor just yet, but I’ve been lucky to meet people along the way who have truly inspired me. I think finding the right mentor is more than just seeking guidance—it’s about connecting with someone who genuinely believes in you and wants to see you succeed. When I do find that person, I want to make sure it’s a great fit, someone who understands my vision and helps me grow in the right direction.

As for networking, what’s worked well for me is simply putting myself out there—going to live shows, open mics, and music events, and really engaging with other artists. Building relationships naturally, rather than just looking for opportunities, has helped me form genuine connections. Social media has also been a great tool, whether it’s reaching out to artists I admire or collaborating with people who share a similar passion for music. At the end of the day, it’s all about surrounding yourself with people who inspire and challenge you to be better.
