Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidge Dunham.
Hi Deidge, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began art as a small child, about 5 or 6 years old. I can remember tracing all of the art my mother would make, she is a painter and a graphic designer, creating custom lettering, pin striping cars and murals. In Jr High, I made stationary in printing class that read “custom tattoos by Deidge” the funny thing is I was in 8th grade… that’s long before tattoos were popular and I really didn’t have much exposure to them. Its because I gave myself a tattoo when I was just 13 years old, and once I did that I was convinced that would be my career. I read about the Maori tribe tattoos in an encyclopedia, and that is where I learned how to give myself the tattoo. My early art was lettering and graffiti throughout middle school and high school, I left marks on many walls and once I finished college, I began my apprenticeship to become a tattooer in 1998. I completed my apprenticeship near the end of 1999 and I have been tattooing since the early 2000’s. My career has been primarily in Southern California the majority of it in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. I recently moved from LA back to my roots back to Austin, Texas. I was born in Texas and wanted to be closer to my family, and after living in ATX in the 90’s, I was eager to return. I work at All Saints Tattoo on burnet rd near the Domain, and I love it here.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I made a lot of poor choices in my early tattooing career 20 years ago that caused huge distractions, which in turn stunted the growth of my abilities and career. I eventually got it together and have been tattooing daily without any interruptions for 18 years. Tattooing has saved my life, taken me around the world, opened many doors, and restored my faith in human connection on more than one occasion.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Neo-Traditional / Floral / Geometric / Japanese / Black & Grey realism /Color tattoos. I am known for my floral work and my cover-up ability.
What I am most proud of as an artist and tattooer is the ability to provide my clients with custom-quality tattoos at a fair rate. I am always proud to help someone feel more comfortable and happy in their skin.
What sets me apart from others is the time I take with my clients designing the perfect tattoo.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have always looked up to my mother who is a phenomenal artist, My mentor Shawn and so many tattooers I have been lucky to know and absorb knowledge and stories, tips and tricks from. Remaining teachable has gotten me far, and I try not to be the smartest person in the room so I can learn a lot.
