Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Anupi.
Hi DJ, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a DJ, event producer, and entrepreneur based in Austin, and music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a Indian household, Bollywood and Punjabi music were always playing around me, but I also fell in love with hip-hop, pop, EDM, Latin music, and global sounds from all over the world. I’ve always been fascinated by how music can bring people together, regardless of their background, and that curiosity eventually grew into a career.
My passion for DJing really started in high school through dance and hip-hop. I found myself constantly searching for new music and imagining how different songs and genres could blend together. I was the friend burning CDs, introducing people to new music, and creating playlists before streaming was the norm. Long before I knew what a “mashup” was, I was naturally imagining how one song could flow into another and experimenting with combinations that just felt right. That curiosity eventually led me to learn the art of DJing, and once I got behind the decks, I was hooked.
Over the years, what started as a creative outlet turned into a business. I’ve had the opportunity to perform at weddings, corporate events, festivals, clubs, and cultural celebrations across Texas and beyond, including performing at SXSW. What I’m most proud of, though, is building a brand that people trust—not just for the music, but for creating experiences that bring people together and leave lasting memories.
As my career evolved, I realized I wanted to do more than DJ. I launched my own DJ and production company, expanding into sound, lighting, and event production so I could help bring people’s visions to life from start to finish. More recently, I’ve also started producing my own events because I love creating spaces where people can connect, celebrate, dance, and simply have an unforgettable time surrounded by great music and good energy.
I’m incredibly grateful that what began as a genuine love for music has grown into a career that allows me to connect with so many different communities. Whether I’m performing at an intimate wedding, a packed dance floor, or producing an event from the ground up, my goal is always the same: to create moments that people remember long after the music stops. I’m excited to continue growing, evolving, and seeing where this journey takes me next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s what has made the journey so rewarding.
When I first started DJing, there weren’t many women in the industry, and there were even fewer South Asian women pursuing it professionally. Around the same time I had started experimenting with mixing music in high school, a Bollywood DJ was hired to perform at my mom’s 40th birthday. I had the opportunity to spend time learning from him and watching the process behind DJing more closely, which helped me understand the craft beyond just putting songs together. That experience encouraged me to dive deeper into learning the technical side of DJing and continue developing my own style. From there, a lot of my journey has been figuring things out as I went, trusting my instincts, and continuing to show up even when I wasn’t sure where the road would lead.
One of the biggest challenges early on was simply choosing a different path. Like many South Asian families, my parents wanted what they believed was the most secure future for me. They encouraged careers like medicine, engineering, or other traditional professions because they wanted me to have stability and opportunity. While I understood where they were coming from, I also knew I couldn’t ignore how passionate I was about music. I still went to college, but I also made the decision to pursue DJing and entrepreneurship. It wasn’t always the easiest path to explain, but I believed in it enough to keep going.
As my career grew, I realized that being a great DJ was only part of the equation. What began as performing eventually grew into running a full DJ and production company, and that came with an entirely new set of challenges. I had to learn how to build a business, manage clients, oversee production, market myself, and wear countless hats behind the scenes—all while continuing to grow as a DJ and stay connected to the music that inspired me in the first place.
Looking back, I’m grateful for every obstacle because each one taught me something I couldn’t have learned otherwise. They pushed me to become more resilient, more confident, and more adaptable. Most importantly, they reinforced that following a passion isn’t always the easiest path, but for me, it has absolutely been the right one.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a DJ, event producer, and creative who specializes in curating experiences through music. At the core of what I do is bringing people together—whether that’s through a packed dance floor, a private celebration, a festival, or an event I’ve helped create from the ground up. I love taking a vision, building the right energy around it, and creating moments that people remember long after the music ends.
My sound is rooted in blending cultures and genres together. Growing up with Bollywood and Punjabi music while also being influenced by hip-hop, pop, EDM, and global sounds naturally shaped the way I approach music today. I specialize in fusion—bringing together sounds from different parts of the world and creating mixes that feel both familiar and unexpected. I love finding the connection between songs and cultures that may seem completely different on the surface but come together perfectly on the dance floor.
Over the years, I’ve become known for creating those global fusion moments—whether that’s blending a Bollywood classic with a club anthem, bringing South Asian sounds into a larger global setting, or curating an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome. For me, DJing has never just been about playing the next song; it’s about reading the room, creating a feeling, and taking people on a journey through music.
One of the things I’m most proud of is building a career that allows me to combine all of my passions: music, creativity, entrepreneurship, and community. I’ve built my own DJ and production company, created events, and continued expanding into producing my own experiences and original remixes. Seeing people from different backgrounds come together, dance, celebrate, and create memories is what continues to inspire me.
What sets me apart is my ability to bridge worlds through music. I’m always looking for ways to blend my cultural roots with sounds from around the globe, while creating an experience that feels inclusive, energetic, and uniquely my own.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always a mix of creativity, curiosity, and a little bit of everything. I was definitely an artsy kid, but I was also very into sports and athletics. I had a bit of a tomboy side. I loved being outside, playing sports, exploring, and being active but, I also loved painting, music, dance, and anything that let me be creative.
I was always involved in something, whether it was sports, extracurricular activities, or creative projects. I think I naturally gravitated toward things that allowed me to express myself, whether that was through movement, art, or music. I was also the kid who spent a lot of time in my own little imaginative world, constantly creating ideas and dreaming up new things.
