Life & Work with Eliud Garcia of Pflugerville, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliud Garcia.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Eliud Garcia – Musician, Educator, and Founder of Frontera Chica Records
Born and raised in Roma, Texas, one of the most musically influential towns along the U.S.–Mexico border, Eliud Garcia has built his career at the crossroads of tradition, innovation, and community. Today, he leads Zeñal Nortex, a norteño band based in Austin, Texas, while also directing his independent label, Frontera Chica Records.
Garcia’s musical path began early. In middle school, he immersed himself in band, choir, and music theory, while also exploring film and production—an early glimpse of the multidisciplinary work he does today. After high school, he pursued music formally at Texas State University in San Marcos, where he earned numerous awards for his artistry and dedication. His academic journey then took him to Yale University on a full-ride scholarship, where he sharpened his skills as a performer, teacher, and collaborator, building a wide-reaching network of musicians that would influence his career.
In 2019, Garcia relocated to Austin, where he began teaching privately while developing new projects. By 2022, he founded Frontera Chica Records and launched Zeñal Nortex, a group that fuses the spirit of border-town traditions with a modern sound. Under his leadership, the label has supported artists such as Escuadrón del Norte, The Midnight Season, Buen Viaje, Hijos de Solís, and others—expanding its reach across genres while staying true to its roots.
With Zeñal Nortex, Garcia has performed at nearly every major venue in Texas, sharing stages with international acts including Conjunto Primavera, Grupo Duelo, Energía Norteña, La Leyenda, and more. Whether in intimate community spaces or packed concert halls, Garcia’s work embodies the resilience and richness of borderland music, bridging his classical training with the lived traditions of norteño and tejano culture.
Through his artistry, teaching, and leadership at Frontera Chica Records, Eliud Garcia continues to carve out space for musicians from Texas and beyond, honoring his hometown roots while shaping the future of regional music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Despite his achievements, Garcia’s journey has not been without challenges. Coming from a small border town with limited resources, he often had to create his own opportunities, balancing school, work, and the pursuit of music. The transition from Roma to larger cities—and eventually to prestigious institutions like Yale—meant navigating cultural shifts, financial pressures, and the weight of proving himself in spaces where few shared his background. Yet those struggles became the fuel that shaped his resilience, giving him the drive not only to succeed as a musician, but also to build platforms, like Frontera Chica Records, that empower others facing similar obstacles.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Among his greatest accomplishments, Garcia takes pride not only in his musical career but also in building a life he values outside of the stage. He has purchased a home in Austin and nurtured a loving family with his wife and their five pets—two cats and three dogs—creating a stable, inspiring foundation that fuels his work. Professionally, what sets Garcia apart is his relentless work ethic and holistic approach to music: he seamlessly balances performing, recording, teaching, and label management, often wearing multiple hats at once. This dedication, combined with his deep respect for musical traditions and innovative vision, allows him to create art that is both authentic and forward-thinking, distinguishing him in a crowded industry.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Austin is its energy and constant creativity. There’s always something happening—whether it’s a live show, amazing food, or just the buzz of the city at night. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by that kind of culture. At the same time, it can be challenging for a norteño band like Zeñal Nortex. The city doesn’t offer as many opportunities for our genre, so we often have to travel to Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio to reach audiences who truly connect with our music. Still, those challenges push me to work harder and stay committed to sharing our sound, while still appreciating all that makes Austin a unique and exciting home.
