Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Kachtick.
Hi Keith, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
After graduating from the University of Texas, I moved to New York to write and teach yoga and Buddhist meditation. In 2005, I was on a book tour for a novel I’d written and was giving a reading at Book People. I had an epiphany: I should return to Austin and open a Buddhist yoga studio. Dharma Yoga has now been in business for over eighteen years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first few weeks after I opened Dharma Yoga, I would sit at the window, hoping someone would come to class. Gradually, people gave it a go, and within two years, Dharma Yoga outgrew its first home and moved into a dramatically bigger space and then into a second space here on the East Side. As the pandemic wound down, I had days like those initial days eighteen years ago, gazing out the window, hoping people would come back to Dharma Yoga. Thankfully, they have.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I was an adventure travel writer for Esquire and Texas Monthly Magazine for a decade and gradually started writing more and more about spirituality and Mindfulness. The creativity needed for writing novels and essays has proven helpful in running a business and designing Dharma Yoga classes.
