Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquet Curl
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born on October 2, 1972, to teenage parents in Nacogdoches, TX., and was raised in a single-parent home for most of my life. Despite facing social, economic, and family challenges, I earned a full academic scholarship to the University of Texas in 1991. In high school, I was also honored with the prestigious Horatio Alger Scholarship, awarded to one student per state, so I represented the entire state of Texas for that year.
I began my professional career in 1992, quickly becoming one of the company’s youngest and first African American executive leaders. I was blessed to build a successful 23-year career before transitioning into full-time ministry. While I attended the University of Texas for three years, I ultimately earned my bachelor’s degree in business management from Texas State University in 2004. Additionally, I hold a bachelor’s in theology from Kingdom Bible University and a master’s in organizational leadership from Regent University. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Regent University.
I planted my church in Kyle, Texas, in 2013 as an in-home Bible study. By 2015, after leaving corporate America, I stepped into full-time ministry. Today, our church, The R.O.C.K. SCT in San Marcos, TX, stands as one of the fastest-growing multicultural and multigenerational churches in South Central Texas—despite my being a first-generation pastor. Above all, I am blessed to share life and ministry with my incredible wife, our three daughters, and two beautiful granddaughters!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I faced socioeconomic, family, and racial challenges to leave a small town in East Texas and pursue higher education, becoming the first male in my family to earn a college degree. In my corporate career, I overcame racial and age-related obstacles to climb the corporate ladder. Even in ministry, we planted a church with no people and no money, believing God would breathe upon our efforts—and He did! There is not a situation in my life that has not come with adversity, obstacles, challenges, and struggles. Yet, this is a part of my testimony of how God has blessed me to either learn from or overcome anything thrown at me in life that was designed to stop me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time pastor and community leader who takes great pride in my ministry’s impact on people of all ages across South Central Texas. Our goal is to model intergenerational impartation in the lives of young people, and nothing brings me more joy than seeing individuals grow in their knowledge and understanding of who God is in their lives. My ability to connect with and lead millennials and Gen Z across all races sets me apart, fostering a diverse and inclusive faith community. I founded the Impact Education Program—the first faith-based mentoring and tutoring initiative in Hays CISD—and served on the Student Health Advisory Council and the District Leadership Team in Hays CISD. I also established the V.I.P. student ministry at Texas State University, designed to help college students build a strong foundation in their faith and develop an authentic relationship with God. Additionally, God blessed me with the opportunity to establish the chaplain program for the Kyle Police Department.
What are your plans for the future?
I look forward to completing my Ph.D. program and developing a leadership cohort that will equip ministry and business leaders with the tools to lead the next generation in today’s world effectively. I also look forward to more young people coming to Christ and seeing God’s kingdom expand exponentially!
