Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Nordstrom.
Hi Nathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Nathan Nordstrom. I am an artist from Austin, Texas. I have been creating art since childhood. In 1990 I started painting Graffiti Art and I haven’t stopped since. In 2005 I transitioned into being a full time professional artist. For the last 18 years I have been traveling the world painting, curating, and teaching Graffiti Art, Murals, and Art Shows.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The Art journey has not been a smooth road. Granted it has become easier for one to make a living off being an artist these days, it’s still a hustle. I have experienced highs and lows in being a full time artist. I didn’t get into art to become rich and famous, there are easier ways to make money. I got into art because I enjoy creating and I needed an outlet. Some of the struggles were jail time, being broke, loss of relationships, drug/alcohol addiction, and practicing an art form that was looked down upon by society. Some of my joys have been watching the art form grow with a younger generation, being able to make a living off my art, traveling the world and meeting like minded artists, and being able to continue doing what I love.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My artwork varies from Wildstyle Graffiti to Abstract Art on canvas and everything in between. I enjoy many forms of art. I try to remain open-minded and teachable. Most people know me for my Graffiti Art but the truth is I paint a lot things. I like to experiment with different mediums and grow from there. I do not post all of my work. Some of my favorite commissioned projects have been the Applied Materials mural that I painted in Northeast Austin, (might be the biggest mural in Austin?), a Helipad out near Lake Travis, and a exterior house mural I painted earlier this year. I really enjoy painting unusual places and surfaces. I feel what sets me apart from others is my experience, longevity, originality, and work ethic. I am proud of the contributions we have made to our city and state when it comes to Graffiti Art.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a curious child. I enjoyed playing outdoors, creating art, skateboarding, and going against the grain. I never felt comfortable conforming to the norm. I was raised on Critical Thinking and to Question Authority. It has kept me alive this long!
