Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricardo Rodriguez. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Two brothers from Mexico City, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Christian Rodriguez, form Gran Moreno. The band’s name, Gran Moreno, pays homage to the dark-skinned Mexican identity and represents the power and energy of the music they create. Although the band is new, they have been able to play shows throughout Mexico, California, and Nevada. Now recently settled in Austin and being the capital of live music, there is no better start for us than to look for new opportunities to grow and express our art and culture through music. Our songs vary between English and Spanish, and the music is powerful, hard, and reminiscent of the purest rock and roll created in the 70s.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It has not been easy to be a musician in Mexico City because, despite being a great city, the opportunities to make a living from your art are minimal. It isn’t easy to integrate into a new language, culture, and identity, as well as the constant travel around the USA. We fought against the classism and racism that exists in Mexico to be able to appear in an independent scene. We changed our life and started over to look for an opportunity in the international music scene.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I studied audio engineering and production, I work in the audio-visual scene, I like to transmit stories through images, I like people to enjoy the videos I create, and I like to think about movies through my personal experiences.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
There is no time to lose; live in the present and enjoy every moment of your life, be honest with yourself and with others, appreciate art and true human connections, trust your body in your mind and the power we have to be well, humans have a lot of power within themselves, we have to trust ourselves.
