Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Andrews
Hi Ryan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up as an introverted only child with a vibrant imagination, I can remember being fixated on tiny details of beauty and visual interest around my home and yard. I would get lost in the stories my mind would create, crafted by the images around me. I believe that I still hold this childlike quality in me today, and I try to approach the art of photography with this same imaginative and reverent observation.
About 4 years ago, after passively exploring photography as a hobby, I decided to pursue it more seriously. I began offering photoshoots to my dance community and friends, primarily boudoir-style shoots. I was inspired by my own personal experience receiving a boudoir photoshoot by a photographer I respect and admire, Kara Marie Trombetta.
Eventually I embraced photography as a second career (I’ve been a psychotherapist for over a decade, and am still in private practice today). I loaded myself with knowledge by taking online courses, in-person workshops, etc. and began building my business. Now, I am working to find the balance between both of my businesses, and I’m loving every minute of it!
I find that my work as a photographer is not unlike my work as a psychotherapist. In both roles my intention is to listen to my clients, witness the parts of themselves they feel brave enough to show me, empower them to fully embrace who they are, and provide them with an exceptional experience that feels safe and enjoyable. I do not take for granted the trust I am given. It is such an honor.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! I am still learning so much every day. I find that some of the biggest hurdles for me have been related to my own internal voice. I struggle with imposter syndrome and self-judgment at times (am i good enough? does someone else do it better? would someone really pay me for this? am i doing anything unique?). I also find that there is so much information out there shared by other photographers that it can be hard to establish what feels right for ME and MY business. Finding a mentor or two to confide in has been helpful, as has been embracing the unknown and allowing myself to make mistakes along the way. I don’t have to know everything today. In fact, I hope I’m ALWAYS learning and growing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a fine art photographer in Austin, Texas. I specialize in creative portraits, and fine art nude/boudoir (though I also offer many other types of photography services as well). I place a strong emphasis on creative composition, natural movement, and emotional expression. I play a lot with light and shadow, and my work is probably best known for its simple yet ethereal qualities, and intimate aesthetic.
Artistically, I am most proud of the ways in which I can capture moody, candid images that are, both, striking and soothing for the eye. As a business owner and human, I am most proud of the way my subjects often report feeling safe and seen during our sessions, as well as how much fun we have together!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Probably that despite being diagnosed with social anxiety as well as being a true introvert (I need lots of time alone to recharge my battery), I am actually a natural performer! I have been a dancer most of my life, love singing karaoke, will officiate a wedding or give an important speech and not so much as break a sweat. BUT, if I’m required to make small talk at a party, I will do so in a way that makes me appear comfortable and outgoing and then anxiously go over every conversation in my head as I’m falling asleep for the next 6 months. Hey, I’m just human!
