Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Comings.
Hi Zoe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My work began with a love of ceramics, spending time outdoors in the natural world around us, and an appreciation for design. Over time, I discovered that porcelain could become more than tabletop or sculpture—it could be worn. That realization led me to create a jewelry collection that blends the timeless elegance of porcelain with modern, minimalist design.
Every piece is handcrafted in my Austin, Texas studio with an emphasis on quality, thoughtful craftsmanship, and lasting style. I believe jewelry should feel effortless, meaningful, and beautifully made—something you’ll reach for every day and treasure for years to come.
Nature has always been my greatest source of inspiration. The colors of the sky, the contours of the landscape, the movement of water, and the quiet beauty of the natural world all find their way into my work. I hope each piece offers a personal connection—not only to the wearer, but also to the environment that sustains us.
In these changing times, I feel it’s more important than ever to remain mindful of the natural resources we share: our water, the aquifers beneath us, the expansive skies above us, and the landscapes that shape our lives. These are not just places we inhabit; they are part of who we are. My jewelry is an invitation to carry a small reminder of that connection every day—to appreciate the beauty around us, to move through the world with intention, and to honor the earth that we all live and breathe on.
My goal has always been to create pieces that celebrate understated elegance while reflecting a deep respect for nature, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of handmade objects. Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting independent design and slow fashion.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey as an artist has been shaped as much by obstacles as by inspiration. Building a life around handmade work requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to begin again. There have been moments of uncertainty, financial challenges, changing markets, and the profound disruption brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, all while balancing the demands of running a creative business and staying true to my vision. Each challenge has taught me to slow down, adapt, and trust the creative process. Rather than losing sight of why I create, those experiences strengthened my commitment to making work that is thoughtful, enduring, and deeply connected to what matters most.
Over the years, I’ve come to understand that what matters most isn’t simply creating beautiful jewelry—it’s creating something that carries meaning. I value slowing down in a world that often asks us to hurry, making things with intention rather than excess, and staying connected to the natural world that inspires and sustains us. These are gifts that deserve our attention and care. If my jewelry encourages someone to pause, feel grounded, remember a special place, or reconnect with nature and themselves, then it has fulfilled its purpose.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work is rooted in slow fashion—creating pieces with intention, quality, and a lasting connection between the object and the wearer. I combine carefully chosen materials including porcelain, 14k gold fill, and 22k gold finishes to create jewelry that balances natural beauty with refined, modern design. The work is designed to carry the feeling of fine jewelry while remaining accessible as a fashion line, within the world of sustainable fashion.
At the heart of my work is the desire to create a personal experience. I want each piece to feel like more than an accessory—to become something meaningful that connects with the wearer, reflects their individuality, and carries a reminder of the beauty and balance found in the world around us.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
One of the biggest risks I ever took was when I decided to start my business. I made a promise to myself: if I landed one solid wholesale account, I would quit my day job and commit fully to my dream. At my very first trade show, I received an order from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). I kept my promise, when I got home, I handed in my resignation, and front that moment forward, became solely invested in ZOË COMINGS.
That one account wasn’t going to carry my entire future, and I knew that. What it gave me was something even more valuable: the confidence to take the leap and believe in myself. It was the affirmation I needed to trust that if I committed wholeheartedly to my work, I could build something meaningful one step at a time. I’ve always loved the saying, “Leap-and the net will appear.” by American naturalist, John Burroughs, that I discovered in Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. That experience taught me that courage often comes before certainty, and that believing in yourself is sometimes the first and most important investment you can make.
