Meet Andreanna Calhoun of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andreanna Calhoun.

Hi Andreanna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been anything but conventional. I didn’t take a straight path to where I am today, and I believe that’s what makes my story so meaningful.

I started my career bartending at Twin Peaks, where I had the opportunity to help open new store locations across the country. That experience taught me leadership, adaptability, work ethic, and how to connect with people from all walks of life. It also gave me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone and embrace new challenges.

At the same time, I developed a passion for health and fitness, which eventually led me to compete at the highest level in bodybuilding as an IFBB Bikini Pro. Bodybuilding taught me discipline, consistency, resilience, and the mindset required to pursue excellence even when no one is watching. Those lessons have carried over into every area of my life.

Eventually, I realized my true calling was in healthcare. I became an emergency room nurse, where I care for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Working in the ER opened my eyes to the critical need for mental health care and showed me that healing goes far beyond treating physical illness.

While working full-time, I balanced raising my son and pursuing my education to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. It not easy; there are countless long shifts, late nights studying, and moments where I questioned whether I can keep going. But every obstacle has strengthened my determination and reminds me why I started.

Today i am in the clinical portion of my master program and, I have the privilege of helping individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and other mental health conditions. My experiences are both personal and professional; which allows me to connect with my patients on a deeper level because I understand what it means to overcome adversity and continue moving forward.

Whether I’m caring for patients, mentoring others, competing in life, or sharing my story, my mission is the same: to inspire people to believe that where you start does not determine where you finish. Every chapter of my journey, from bartending, to bodybuilding, to nursing, to mental health, has prepared me to serve others with compassion, authenticity, and purpose.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. My journey has been filled with challenges, setbacks, and moments where I questioned whether I could keep going. Balancing multiple roles, mother, full-time emergency room nurse, student, workouts, my son sports………. I often, sacrificing sleep, personal time, and comfort to keep moving toward my goals.

Like many people, I’ve experienced personal hardships that tested my resilience. There were seasons of self-doubt, financial stress, heartbreak, and the pressure of trying to excel in every area of my life while still showing up for others. Working in the emergency department also exposed me to a different kind of loss, which reinforced the importance of protecting my own mental health while caring for others.

Competing as an IFBB Bikini Pro came with its own challenges. While people often see the trophies or the stage, they dont see the discipline, setbacks, injuries, strict routines, or the mental toughness required behind the scenes. That experience taught me that success isn’t about perfection, it’s about consistency and continuing to move forward even when it’s difficult.

One of my biggest lessons has been realizing that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s okay to struggle, and it’s okay to lean on others. Those difficult seasons shaped who I am today and gave me a deeper level of empathy for the people I care for.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change my journey. Every challenge strengthened my character, refined my purpose, and reminded me that resilience isn’t about avoiding hard times, it’s about choosing to keep going despite them and always keeping god first. Today, those experiences allow me to connect with people in an authentic way and remind them that healing, growth, realignment and transformation are possible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an Emergency Room nurse, I care for patients during some of the most critical moments of their lives. Working in emergency medicine has taught me to stay calm under pressure, think quickly, and lead with compassion. I’m especially passionate about the connection between physical and mental health, which inspired me to pursue psychiatric mental health. What I’m most proud of is being able to make a difference for patients when they need it most. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to make my patients laugh even when they are in pain, ensuring every patient feels heard, respected, and cared for.
I’m excited to add more value to the mental health community as a Nurse Practitioner when I graduate next May.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
1st do a prayer to have god guide you, protect you, and align you into your purpose.

If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t let fear or self-doubt, children stop you from chasing your goals. Your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s, and you don’t have to have everything figured out to get started. Just Start‼️

I’ve learned that success isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being consistent. There will be setbacks, long nights, sick days, hard days and moments when you question yourself, but don’t quit. Every challenge is preparing you for the next level.

Also, don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter twenty. Stay focused on your own growth, keep learning, and trust the process. If you have children try to include them in the process. Looking back, I wish I had given myself more grace and celebrated the small wins along the way instead of always worrying about the finish line. Those small victories are what build the confidence to achieve the big ones.
