Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Aloys.
Hi Anita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my content creation journey in college as a hobby. I’ve always loved fashion and always wanted to be around it. In 2013, I joined Instagram and started sharing what I was wearing and how I was styling them with my friends and family for fun, and luckily they indulged me, LOL. However, as time went on, I started to notice that I was building a community of people beyond just my friends who wanted to see more. I also noticed that my community was not only drawn to just the visuals, but they also wanted to learn from me. This pushed me to start my first blog (thelotuspure.com) to share fashion and styling tips.
From then on, I started putting a little more effort into nurturing my community but I never fully took it as a career choice till 2018. By 2018, I was done with college and working at a financial services company from 9-5 and when I would get home, I clocked in and worked on my blog in the evenings and on the weekends. That was also when I realized that I really would love to do this (or a version of this) for the rest of my life and decided to make it a goal. Fast forward to today, I am still working on that goal but this time, I am doing it full time and I can not be happier.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Oh, definitely not! One of the biggest challenges I faced when I got started was finding resources. Back in 2014/2015, there were very few resources on how to get started with content creation, building blogs, and editing, etc., the community was smaller and not a lot of people were willing to teach or share tips with others like it is right now where you can go on YouTube and learn everything. I spent a lot of my time was spent learning how to do things for cheaper (as a broke college student) but those late nights definitely build the creator that I am today.
There’s also the constant battle of self-doubt, always wanting to reinvent yourself to make sure that your content remains fresh in a constantly changing digital space and tackling entrepreneurship post-pandemic. But despite all of this, it has been a great journey and all these experiences have helped build my voice, community and confidence to become the woman that I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am Fashion, Travel and Lifestyle Content Creator. The term content creator is so broad because it makes you a one-man team where you become all the arms of a marketing agency from the concept originator to the photographer, editor, publicist and everything really. But the part I identify with the most about being a content creator is being an advocate and a voice for your community. My mission is to showcase that women, especially Black women can curate a life we love that is full of luxury, self-care and that it can be as colourful as we want it to be. I grew up around strong who loved indulging in their self-care and uplifting others and I am so proud that when I’ve managed to create a platform that celebrates these elements.
I am primarily known for my attainable street style and lifestyle updates, I like to believe that it is a reminder that you can always elevate your everyday routines.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Oh, this is a big one! I have taken some risks in my life but I believe the biggest was leaving corporate in 2020 during the pandemic to become a full-time creator. I am not the biggest risk taker, I am really more of a plan A to C girl but when the opportunity came to make that change, I knew I had to do it at the time or I never would.
However, the journey after taking that jump has not been the easiest, I’ve also encountered challenges and too. I’ve learned that there’s so much that goes into being your own boss and making sure that you and your team are on course to achieve your goals.
Taking that risk was definitely scary but that decision has made me happier than I ever thought it would as I get the opportunity to dedicate most of my attention to building something I love and being more intentional with it. I would make that jump again if asked.
