Meet Bijal Ghelani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bijal Ghelani.

Bijal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my career as an architect in India, where I worked for several years before taking some time off to travel through Europe with my husband. What was meant to be a short exploration eventually became home. Inability to continue in architecture due to linguistic barriers, I shifted my carrier direction. I picked up a paintbrush simply to keep myself occupied, but what started as a pastime quickly grew into something more meaningful. Painting became my channel of expression, a way to capture what I had seen, experienced, and felt in all those years of moving between countries & cultures.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a road with plenty of bumps, but every one of them taught me something. The painting itself came naturally to me. That part has always felt intuitive. What I wasn’t prepared for was everything else that comes with being a working artist today. Understanding the art market took real trial and error: figuring out which shows and platforms were worth my time, how pricing works, what galleries actually expect from you.

The bigger challenge has been social media. It’s constant, building a presence, staying visible, engaging and it pulls hours away from the studio. I had to learn that being a working artist isn’t just about the canvas; it’s marketing, it’s business, it’s showing up online in a way that still feels authentic. That balance between creating and promoting is something I’m still working on.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been creating art for over a decade, and it’s been shaped by a lifelong passion combined with the way of what I’ve seen, experienced, and where I’ve been.
I work primarily in oil, using both brushwork and palette knives to capture the world around me which includes the light and the quiet moments that are easy to miss. I specialize in still life, florals, fauna, and architectural subjects.
My attention to light and detail is what I am known for. I want people to slow down when they look at my work, to notice things they’d normally walk past.

I’m most proud of staying consistent to that vision while still growing- building a body of work that feels honest to my own experience rather than chasing trends. A strong eye for composition paired with an instinct for color and light in my works feels distinctly mine.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Moments aren’t created but they exist everywhere, waiting to be noticed. A hillside at a particular hour, the way light plays across a castle ruin, the reflection a structure casts on still water; these are the moments I wait for. Light doesn’t just illuminate my subjects; it transforms them. My architectural training taught me to read these details, and painting taught me to feel them. I don’t paint what I see; I paint what it holds.

I hope viewers feel that same pause- a recognition that the quiet, easily overlooked moment is often where the most meaning is found. In a world that rarely pauses, I paint the pause itself. Subtle details and familiar forms often carry a sense of nostalgia, evoking memories that feel both personal and shared, while also inviting a deeper appreciation for the present. My work is a reminder that beauty and meaning exist within the ordinary, even amid constant change.

My work doesn’t end with the final brushstroke but continues in the connection with the people who bring it into their homes. I offer both original paintings and prints, so there’s a way to collect my work at different levels. I also take on commissions for those who want something created specifically for their space. You can find my work and follow along at bijalghelani.com and on Instagram @bijalghelaniart. If something here speaks to you, I’d love to hear from you.
