Meet Brittany Greer of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Greer.

Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been DJing for 13 years. What started as a fun hobby wound up becoming one of my favorite passions. I began my journey as a DJ supporting other yoga instructors in their classes by providing music. I also played for art galleries, skydiving gyms, music festival workshops and retreat centers. I’ve DJ’d in many cities and a couple other countries as well but really fell in love with playing music in Austin in 2021 when I made my return from 5 years of travel & living elsewhere. I landed predominantly in elevated boutique lounges and hotels but LOVE a good dance party too! Last year I was in the Future Front DJ Residency program where I got to play for several community events around the city as well as meet other local femme & queer DJs. I got to play BabeStock in their first year which also centers women and queer folks. I love this city and the community surrounding DJ culture. There are so many ways to plug in here (literally!) from lounges, to clubs, rooftops to pool parties, it really has been a great place to spread my wings musically and take this more seriously as a career path. All of that experience and those different settings have given me a really eclectic sound selection that spans multiple genres, decades, and geographic location. From jungle and tropical world music, to bass heavy electronic music, hip hop & rnb, to disco & house – fusing all these worlds together is so fun! Always unlocking new mixes and mashups that feel really new yet familiar.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning, when I was just doing it for the love, it felt really smooth. I was just playing for the fun of it. Now that I’m relying more on it as a source of income it has made things feel a little more complicated. I love doing something I love as a job, but it also puts pressure on me to keep myself relevant, book gigs, put out content, make flyers etc. and all the backend work that happens when you’re a working DJ. Those are my biggest hurdles – the love of playing music keeps me going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear several different hats in the professional world. Though I’m not a full time anything, I do teach 6 yoga classes per week, DJ almost every weekend, and cater yoga and wellness retreats seasonally. I love all things wellness related so I find myself in those environments most of the time. I got my start DJing in yoga classes, I got my start catering for yoga retreats, I’ve done massage therapy school, nutrition therapy, personal training etc. so that’s what lights me up. Figuring out how to best support myself and others in their overall well-being. Music is CRUCIAL in that, and often times being in the industry can take its toll on our health. Late hours, regular substance use, standing on hard surfaces hunched over a table for hours at a time. One of my goals is to smash all of my passions together into a retreat for musicians and industry professionals. I think my unique and diverse skill set really makes for a supportive offering to my community of creatives.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That depends on who you’re asking! Because I have 3 different jobs, people that know me in each role might be surprised to learn about the others. In my 6am yoga classes people are surprised to learn that I DJ on the weekends. At my catering gigs they’re surprised to learn I teach yoga. It might surprise everyone to know that despite how much of my work deals with people-ing, I’m actually kind of a hermit and really enjoy time alone in silence.
