Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin McWeeney.
Hi Caitlin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always known as “the girl with the camera.” No surprises there since I’m a second-generation photographer. When I was in high school, you could find me photographing my friends for the yearbook, spending hours in the darkroom for art class or documenting random adventures.
I ended up majoring in Photojournalism in college and instead of a traditional job in media, I decided to strike out on my own and start a wedding photography business.
Even after nearly ten years of photographing weddings, I still feel incredibly lucky to be a part of such a personal day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think if anyone says starting and running your own business is a smooth and easy road…they’re lying.
Especially a creative business like weddings & events where an unforeseen global pandemic can knock you on your feet again and again. Many of my struggles are familiar to a lot of us passionate and creative people- Impostor syndrome, self-doubt, burnout, etc.
But having the support of my parents and the entire Austin community has been immeasurable. Knowing there are others going through it as well helps a lot.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a full-time photographer based in sunny Austin, Texas shooting weddings & engagements for some amazing couples. The photos my clients receive are warm, timeless, and joyful.
I feel like my non-invasive approach to wedding photography makes my couples happy and feel more comfortable in front of the camera. It can be nerve-wracking to be photographed for 8 hours straight but I try to make it easy and stress-free by prepping you ahead of time as much as possible. I collaborate with my clients to understand what they want to see in their wedding photos and how I can best make that happen for them.
Even after nearly ten years of photographing weddings, I still feel lucky to be in charge of documenting your big day. I’m proud to be a second-generation photographer and business owner. Without my parents’ support and understanding, I would not be where I am today.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Austin is the prettiest city in Texas. Averaging about 300 days of sunshine a year, we are lucky to have almost a year-round wedding season. There is so much natural beauty within the city that really makes you feel connected to nature without having to go far. The least amazing thing about Austin is the lack of a robust public transit system. If we are going to build more dense housing in our urban core, I feel like we should put more consideration into how to move people around without cars or build more helpful mixed use developments.
