Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Bailey.
Hi Candice, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Just looking at my work background, I don’t think anybody would guess that I would be where I am today. When I told my friends and family that JL and I were buying a chocolate company, they all said they couldn’t think of a more fitting career path. Since moving to Austin in 2015, I’ve been very fortunate to have worked for family owned businesses such as Playland, Lucy in Disguise and Juke Auto. These iconic establishments have created their own long-lasting impacts to the community. Each job has had its own set of unique challenges. The common denominator between them all is how much hard work and care went into not only the business, but to those who worked for it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every new business venture has its challenges, but for the most part, it has been relatively smooth. Most of the struggles come from lack of experience- occasionally that can feel overwhelming. I like to remind myself that we have been able to tackle every new obstacle presented thus far. During the times that I am unable to use my logical brain and start to doubt myself, it helps that I am not alone on this journey- my partner in life and business is there.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SRSLY Chocolate?
We specialize in ethically sourced bean-to-bar chocolate. The two of us do everything ourselves, outside of growing the cacao. We are known for our 70% dark chocolate. Our most popular bars have 70% chocolate as the base, and then additional inclusions such as cranberries, pecans, almonds, or candied ginger. We mill our cacao for at least a week, which gives the resulting chocolate an extremely smooth texture. I am most proud of all of our efforts to be as sustainable as possible. I’m thinking of new ways we can improve upon that just about every day!
What makes you happy?
I find happiness in setting and completing new goals for myself. Every day is up to what I make of it and it fills me with a sense of pride to not let myself and those that depend on me down.
