Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Mercke.
Hi corey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Military veteran from Louisiana, family of entrepreneurs in the printing world. Met my wife in karate class and moved to Austin on a whim of meeting her here post college, just in time for covid to happen. By then I had build from scratch a luxury publication and part-owned an apothacary in Cedar Park, selling both during covid and getting into solar. I realized quickly door-to-door is make-or-break but not used efficiently, so I built Flo State Cleaning Services only to have a neighbor up the road in Leander buy me out completely, except the name within a year! At the same time, at the tailend of my solar and cleaning career, I was in an Airbnb, and a lost home inspector knocked on my door at 11pm one night; he eneded up staying next door for a few days and we got to talking about a parth in home inspection. I immediately dove into training once getting home, going through schooling and partial internship with a local company that ended up hiring someone else, so, Flo State Home Inspection was born and growing ever since!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anything BUT smooth here: Building a publication knowing not a soul in Austin was a feat in itself, only to do it again with 3 more companies while raising a puppy and getting engaged and married to the love of my life durring the insanity of covid was wild and we would need some whiskey and time to cover it all..
Not to mention, after getting covid twice, we were hit by a drunk driver 5 days after getting married…wild enough eh?
As you know, we’re big fans of Flo State Home Inspection. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We simply do only inspect homes here, we share stories. My time behind the magazine taught me so much about stories that I carried that over into our practice with home inspections: every home has a story, we need only to share it with our clients. This practice, this trade, is engulfed in scrutiny and partial ambiguity of how it is completed in the eyes of the clients and agents alike. Most assume we’ll just spend 30 minutes to an hour skipping through a home, marking off this and that, maybe find a few things but it’s really not a required labor, if only to provide assurance that all is well…and nothing can be further from the truth.
Flo State is known for diligence, professionalism and courtesy. We put our clients and their home’s first with ALL they need to know about our findings, how they can have them fixed or remedied, while keeping things simple for our explanations as to not over burden nor frighten them out of one of the biggest purchases of their lives!
Their understanding is what truly matters here – the knowing that the sky is not falling and so long as the house is not on track to collapse or burn down, they are still in control and capable of handling even some of the heaviest of findings from our report.
Our reputation, though young and growing, speaks for itself, no matter who contacts up for a quote, job or even simple questions from other inspection reports – we are and will remain there for our clients anywhere in the State!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Never assume – never assume a home has a certain build or item a certain way even having seen it a thousand times. Never assume the clients can easily grasp the entirety of a report, always be ready to explain the smallest of findings until they get it. And never, ever assume the agents will disclose everything for a property – always review it virtually to ensure all is covered and there are no surprises we will walk into come inspection time.
