Today we’d like to introduce you to David Bates II.
Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been far from linear. Several years ago, I was a college student at the University of North Texas studying Criminal Justice and International Studies, with the dream of eventually working in federal intelligence and counterterrorism. I had a sense of purpose, but during that time I also found myself surrounded by environments that pulled me away from the person I wanted to become. I became focused on fitting in, seeking validation, partying, and trying to gain the respect of people whose opinions ultimately had very little to do with the life I wanted to build.
Around that time, a friend convinced me to join a modeling organization called MOSE. Initially, I had very little interest in modeling. I questioned whether it was masculine, serious, or something people would respect. However, as I began learning about the industry, meeting creatives, and developing confidence, I discovered something that genuinely inspired me.
Eventually, I signed with my first modeling agency, Campbell Agency. Despite that opportunity, I still struggled with self-belief. Part of me questioned whether modeling was a legitimate career, and instead of fully committing to the opportunity, I sabotaged myself. I showed up late to castings and shoots, continued partying, and failed to take my career as seriously as I should have. Eventually, I lost my agency representation.
Around the same time, I experienced a major personal loss when a mentor who had believed in me early in my career was murdered. His death profoundly affected me. He was one of the people who had recognized potential in me at a time when I was struggling to recognize it in myself. That experience forced me to confront how I was living my life and ask myself whether I wanted to continue seeking validation from others or finally commit to becoming the person I knew I could become.
I chose to change. I distanced myself from destructive environments, began taking modeling seriously, and worked nightlife jobs to support myself financially while continuing to invest in my career. I kept learning, improving my portfolio, building relationships, and submitting myself to agencies and opportunities around the world.
Over time, those efforts led to representation with seven modeling agencies internationally and opportunities to work in markets around the world. I booked campaigns, including earning more than $14,000 for a four-hour Nivea campaign in Cape Town, appeared in a campaign with Royal Ivy Regatta that was displayed in malls throughout Thailand, and had the opportunity to travel and work across countries including South Africa, Thailand, and India.
However, the biggest transformation was not the money or the travel. It was becoming someone I respected.
After traveling internationally, I eventually returned to the United States and experienced another period of uncertainty. I was living with my mother, rebuilding financially, and trying to determine what the next chapter of my life would look like. After moving back to Austin, I was introduced to the world of online coaching through someone who was successfully helping hundreds of women through mindset, guidance, and transformation. For the first time, I began to see that a person’s experiences could become valuable tools for helping others.
Later, working with a mentor who focused on mindset, belief systems, and personal transformation helped me see my own journey differently. I realized that everything I had learned—the self-sabotage, mindset shifts, confidence, networking, communication, branding, and strategic career decisions—was not simply my personal story. It was knowledge that could help other people avoid some of the mistakes I had made.
That realization led to the creation of Global Fashion Guide.
Today, I use my experience as an international model and entrepreneur to help aspiring and working models better understand the industry, build stronger portfolios, improve their positioning, develop confidence, and create opportunities for themselves. My purpose is not simply to help people become successful models. It is to help them stop waiting for other people to validate their potential and start building careers—and lives—they can genuinely respect.
In many ways, Global Fashion Guide is the result of my own transformation. I almost missed the opportunity to live one of my dreams because I was too concerned with becoming someone other people would respect. Now, I hope to help others recognize that the version of themselves they may be afraid to pursue could be the very person they are meant to become.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road. In many ways, the biggest obstacles I faced were internal before they were external. Early in my modeling career, I struggled with self-belief and was overly concerned with whether other people would see modeling as a serious or respectable career. That insecurity led to self-sabotage—I did not always take opportunities as seriously as I should have, and I eventually lost my first agency representation.
I also experienced rejection, financial instability, and periods of uncertainty. Building an international career required me to constantly adapt to new markets, submit myself repeatedly, build relationships, and continue investing in my portfolio and development even when there was no guarantee of a return. There were times when I returned home after traveling internationally and had to rebuild financially and personally while figuring out what the next chapter of my life would look like.
One of the most difficult experiences was losing a mentor who believed in me during a period when I was still struggling to believe in myself. That experience forced me to reevaluate how I was living and the people and environments I was allowing to influence me.
Over time, I learned that setbacks were not necessarily signs that I was on the wrong path. I had to become more disciplined, take greater ownership of my decisions, and stop waiting for validation from other people. The road has included rejection, self-doubt, financial challenges, and significant personal loss, but those experiences ultimately shaped the resilience, perspective, and purpose I bring to my work today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Global Fashion Guide LLC.?
Global Fashion Guide is an education and coaching platform designed to help aspiring and working models navigate the fashion and modeling industry with greater clarity, confidence, and strategy. We specialize in helping models understand how to position themselves for the right markets, develop stronger portfolios and digitals, approach agencies and clients professionally, build their personal brands, and create more intentional career opportunities.
What sets Global Fashion Guide apart is that our approach goes beyond teaching someone how to pose, walk, or simply look like a model. We focus on the **business and strategy behind building a modeling career**. Our signature framework, the **Hermes Blueprint**, combines mindset development, market positioning, portfolio strategy, personal branding, and direct outreach. The goal is to help models stop waiting to be discovered and instead learn how to actively build and manage their careers.
The brand was built from my own experience navigating the industry internationally. I understand the uncertainty that comes with not knowing which agencies to approach, which photographers to work with, how to build a portfolio, or whether you’re making the right career decisions. After learning through years of trial and error and building relationships across international markets, I wanted to create a resource that could help other models avoid unnecessary mistakes and gain access to information that often feels difficult to find.
I am especially proud that Global Fashion Guide is rooted in transformation rather than simply appearances. Modeling can be an incredibly competitive industry, and many talented people struggle not because they lack potential, but because they lack guidance, strategy, confidence, or access to the right information. Our work helps models develop both the external tools—such as portfolios, digitals, communication, and career strategy—and the internal foundation needed to handle rejection, uncertainty, and the pressures of the industry.
Ultimately, I want readers to know that Global Fashion Guide is for people who are serious about building something meaningful with their potential. Whether someone is just beginning or already working and feeling stuck, our goal is to provide education, mentorship, and practical strategies that help them approach their careers with greater ownership.
The message behind the brand is simple:
> **You don’t have to wait to be discovered to begin building the career you want.**
Global Fashion Guide exists to help models become more informed, strategic, confident, and intentional—not only in how they navigate the modeling industry, but in how they see their own potential.
