Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Graves.
Hi Drew, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a love for drawing and creating, but I didn’t start taking it seriously until after I graduated from college. I took an art class while in college and it resonated with me more than all my other courses that I took. Once I returned home, I started drawing every single day, I just kept practicing and eventually made an Instagram account to post my work. I still draw everyday and use it as a form of meditation. It’s the best way I know to express myself, challenge myself, and stay focused.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been pretty fortunate throughout my life and I am so extremely grateful to have had the opportunities that have come my way. Creating art is not my full-time job. I have always worked a steady job and found time to make art when I can. I either wake up early everyday and make something or as soon as I get off work I’m starting a new project. I hope to one day be able to support myself as a full-time artist and focus on creating for a living.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create hand-drawn illustrations with pen and ink, digital illustrations, and graphic art. I love to make simple line drawings as well as detailed dot work. I also create small drawings on joint papers and then burn them. The idea behind burning my work is that I am releasing creativity back into to the universe and I think it looks dope.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have never had a mentor, but I have found plenty of people that inspire me and that I look up to.
