Meet Dušica Mihajlović of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dušica Mihajlović.

Hi Dušica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Ten years ago, I worked as a freelancer for an American company researching Instagram influencers who deal with whole foods, organic, vegan, vegetarian, paleo…nutrition. The company produces vegan cosmetics, so it needed influencers who could advertise their products.

I was amazed at what these people, from nutritionists, recipe creators to food stylists, did and posted on their Instagram accounts, and I was simply inspired to do it myself. I am also impressed by the people who used their influence to spread awareness about healthy eating, but especially awareness for the fight against animal cruelty.

I decided that I will join those noble and talented people and I decided to make beautiful creations that will be based on plants. As you can see, all my recipes are plant-based.

Very quickly I started getting a lot of followers and likes for my work.

Many manufacturers and traders noticed me and offered me to be a brand ambassador or their promoter. I was a brand ambassador for the company Rawnice Superfoods. Now I mainly promote herbal products produced by companies from my country, Serbia.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not an easy road. Instagram didn’t give me much visibility, and now that situation is even more difficult because of the Instagram algorithm.

I have offers for advertising the products of foreign companies, but there are certain customs obstacles, so some jobs are pending.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create quick, tasty and healthy recipes from cereals, chickpeas, fruits, vegetables, seeds, using natural sweeteners such as dates, maple syrup, and most often just a banana is enough. These are puddings, porridges, salads, and I use quinoa, oats, millet, buckwheat, chia seeds, flax seeds. For porridge, I mostly use vegetable milks (from oats, coconut, almonds, rice…)

I love making Buddha bowls. They are a meal of salads full of colorful vegetables, arranged from whole grains, fresh or roasted vegetables and usually with avocado, using flavorful dressings. I always recommend lemon or lime, with olive oil and herbs.

Since I am neither a nutritionist nor a professional chef, I only give advice based on my own experience. So I very often remind my followers to follow their taste or the needs of their body. For example, if I decorate a bowl with a lot of fruit and suggest it for breakfast, I must make sure that people pay attention to whether that amount and type of fruit is good for their body.

So, they should also experiment in the kitchen and introduce variety into their diet, and also provide an opportunity to meet the unique nutritional needs of their body.
A focus on intuitive eating and freedom in creating meals leads to better overall health.

Of course, I always have a strong need to express creativity and make my bowls and parfaits (desserts in a glass) look stylish. In addition, I create for ladies who don’t have much time to spend in the kitchen.

As a stylist I often use flowers. I always point out if the flowers are not edible but only used for decoration.

I have received many compliments (from both men and women) that I am a real artist and that I inspire them to eat healthy, be creative and build healthy habits. And most importantly, to motivate people to prepare their meals at home as often as possible.

Isn’t it a great honor when you are someone’s inspiration?

In addition to the above, I am the owner of an apartment hotel on Mount Tara in Serbia. It is called ‘Vila Mihajlović Tara’. It is the most beautiful mountain in our country. I am engaged in renting out apartments. I have regular guests who love to rest in our hotel.

I spend a lot of time there. It is my oasis of peace, fresh air, spring water, healthy life and, of course, greater inspiration. Also for my guests, to whom I am completely devoted when I am there.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Unfortunately, I have never been to America, but I would like to visit Texas and Austin in particular. As a nature lover I would love to see Zilker Park, Lady Bird Lake and I would love to swim in Barton Springs.

Art is my great love, so I would visit all the museums.

I’m not one of those people who would just like to visit New York and California.
