Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmie Knox, LMSW.
Hi Emmie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband Louis and I opened Assisting Hands West Austin in October of 2016. We are both native Austinites and have deep roots in Central Texas. My professional background is in medical social work, working in skilled nursing, hospice, and crisis intervention. I have a lot of experience working with adults in residential settings, and early in my Social Work studies I realized I had a love for working with the older adult population. This background enabled me to understand the systems and levels of care in healthcare. We opened Assisting Hands West Austin with a goal to actively collaborate with healthcare partners in the city to ensure clients were receiving appropriate care including our caregiving services.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have learned a lot throughout the years and it’s been a growth experience in a lot of ways. We are fortunate to have such a skilled and compassionate team of caregivers as well as a dedicated and supportive administrative team that we work very closely with.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our administrative team has a strong background in social work, which enables us to use a clinical and holistic view when meeting with clients and families. We excel at brokering resources and making sure clients are aware of other area resources available to them, so they can age in place comfortably and safely.
Any big plans?
Louis and I help new home care owners open their offices and get off the ground, and it’s something I really enjoy. We have helped new Assisting Hands owners in San Antonio, Georgetown, and other parts of Austin open their offices and start serving their own clients. The new owners can learn from our experience, and we can also all brainstorm and work together when helpful, which has been very rewarding.
