Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Coffman.
Hi Gary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Gary earned his BS in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin and became one of Austin’s pioneers in the retail pet business. Any central Texas retailer worth his salt has dealt with Gary at one point or another. The Aqua-Dome is the culmination of his many successful business ventures. Gary has encountered many techniques for keeping fish in his years of dealing with hobbyists. With a base in science and a little luck, he says “the only wrong way is the one that didn’t work”. Past president of the Austin Aquarium Club, former member of the Fish Judges Registry of Texas, past Master of Ceremonies for the Federation of Texas Aquarium Societies (FOTAS) convention in San Antonio. Studied at Dr. Gratzek’s Fish Disease Workshop at the University of Georgia, attended the 2nd Fish Health Symposium at the University of New England. Here at the Aqua-dome we strive to be the best we can. Our main objective is to make our customers successful, so that the animals in our care go home to live out long happy lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The ice storm of 2021 was certainly a set back, the store was without power for 60 hours with no ability to get
to the store.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My current position is the owner of the Austin Aqua-Dome, Texas’s most unique tropical fish store. We offer the largest
selection of tropical freshwater and marine fish, corals, invertebrates available in central Texas. Our rise from a small beginning to one of the premier fish stores in the country is one of the things that I am proud of, along with the staff that has gotten us here. They are a big part of our success. The sheer quantity and variety of our stock elevates and separates us from our competition.

We are a destination spot, and were featured as the publication “111 Place in Austin You Must Not Miss”. The uniqueness
of our Big Blue Dome brings in a lot of visitors.
