Meet Glaze Zine of Central Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glaze Zine.

Hi Glaze Zine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Glaze was founded in 2019 as a makeup-focused zine inspired by art history. It began as a small group of young artists looking for a creative outlet. Our current co-EIC’s, Mariam “Mars” Ali (she/her) and Skyler Burk (she/her), originally served as the zine’s Creative Director and Editorial Director respectively. In 2021, Ali and Burk were handed the reins and have led the magazine since. Five years later, the zine has come far from its humble beginnings in the basement of Duren Hall on the University of Texas at Austin’s campus and has expanded in every way, shape, and form. Despite the zine’s centralized home base in Austin, contributors from across the country add to the zine’s success each season.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has had countless bumps! Once Burk and Ali were given control of the magazine, learning to manage the behind-the-scenes operations came with a huge learning curve. They were confident in their ability to run a shoot, but keeping track of administrative tasks, budgets, and a 100+ team was challenging. However, after five years, Glaze has come a long way and only improves every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Glaze offers the creative community a space to collaborate and the wider Austin community quality, editorial art. Our team of models, photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, writers, graphic designers, and other creatives all come from unique backgrounds and use that diversity to create each volume.

Aside from the magazine, we are well known for our events. During each volume’s production, we organize events where anyone can come and connect over music and art, and we always have a release party to celebrate our latest issues. We’ve hosted vendor markets, silent auctions, and even Halloween parties!

Our proudest achievement so far is our limited-edition coffee table book anthology. We released it in honor of our 10th volume and five-year anniversary, and it features some behind-the-scenes content of our previous shoots. From beginning to end, its a great representation of how our work has improved over the years.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Community: Glaze has always placed the betterment of the community at the center of what we do. We host events so people can connect, we make a magazine so people can explore their passions together, and we raise funds for grassroots organizations. As we continue to grow, we make sure our work continues to benefit the community.

Passion: The majority of our members have a day job or are university students outside of Glaze. We have creative industry professionals, but we also have people in more technical fields. However, everyone in Glaze joins for their passion for creativity. Everyone is here because they want to be here and are driven by their passion; as a whole, we care about the people, the work, and the community.

Integrity: Staying true to original mission maintains our integrity — serving the community and giving people the opportunity to pursue their passions. By staying true to ourselves, we foster a sense of trust and mutual respect among our members. When you believe in yourself and stay true to your vision, people will inevitably be drawn to join.
