Meet Jade Place of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Place.

Hi Jade, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started Hillside Farmacy with a simple but deeply personal vision: to create a place that honored the history of our neighborhood while bringing people together over thoughtful, locally sourced food. Back in 2011, we signed the lease on a building on East 11th Street that had once been a beloved drugstore that closed in the 70’s. It was in rough shape, but we saw its potential, not just as a restaurant, but as a way to preserve a piece of Austin’s history.

We spent a full year restoring the space, acting as general contractors, tilers, painters, gardeners, whatever was needed to bring it back to life. We worked hard to keep as many original elements as possible, along with adding vintage apothecary cabinets from a Drugstore in Elgin,

Today, we’re incredibly proud of what Hillside Farmacy represents. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s a reflection of our journey, our neighborhood, and the people who have supported us along the way. And we’re still showing up every day, doing the work to keep that story going.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

Like many small, independent restaurants, we’ve had to navigate the ups and downs of the industry while maintaining an aging historic building that constantly needs care and investment. The biggest test came in 2020, when COVID forced us to close our doors almost overnight. We had to make incredibly difficult decisions, all while trying to support our team and keep the business afloat. It was a moment that really tested our resilience.

In the years since, we’ve continued to face unexpected hurdles, from ongoing maintenance issues to multiple break-ins that have caused both financial strain and emotional stress. At one point, we were even dropped by our insurance company, which added another layer of uncertainty.
But through all of it, we’ve remained committed to what we started. Every challenge has reinforced how much this place means to the community. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly meaningful, and that’s what’s kept us going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At its core, Hillside Farmacy is a restaurant where food, history, and community come together. I would hope we are known for thoughtful, approachable food in a space that feels warm, welcoming, and rich with history. Every detail, from the antique pharmacy shelves, garnishes picked straight from our garden to our soda fountain, is intentional and rooted in the story of East Austin, something I’ve been able to further shape through my background in graphic design, from our logo to our menus and marketing, creating a cohesive visual story.

What I’m most proud of is the building restoration; our work was recognized with a Preservation Austin Award, and we were honored to help the building earn its designation as a Historic Landmark.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Honestly, if you talk to someone in the restaurant industry, they might tell you “don’t do it” (ha). It’s a tough business but that’s also why having the right people around you matters so much.

My advice is to find someone you genuinely admire and respect, even if they’re not in your exact industry. Mentorship doesn’t have to be formal, some of the most valuable guidance comes from simply building real relationships, asking questions, and staying curious.
