Today we’d like to introduce you to James Wolfgang Kuntz.
Hi James Wolfgang, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started off as a cowboy in Mexico growing up and then went to the University of Texas. From there, I worked in logistics for a few years, then in technology for private equity and VC-backed software companies. While I was doing all that, I was also doing real estate investing.
I was at a conference, and one of the speakers was hiring for a chief sales officer of his roofing company. I stepped into that role. From there, I went and worked for the largest re-roofing platform in the U.S. and figured out there was a better way to grow and scale a roofing company. I decided to go out on my own and create that environment that I was never able to be a part of.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been a smooth road. I’ve learned through my failures, but I think the art of it is learning through other people’s failures before it becomes a big enough one that can put you out of business, right?
Part of what I did was interview other roofing companies, just do what I could to add value to them, learn from each of them, and share best practices. I think people at the top collaborate, and people at the bottom compete.
Some of the struggles and challenges are that doing the right thing isn’t always the most profitable thing. It’s deciding fully to be the brand that you want to be, what you want to stand for, and following up with those things.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tarrytown Roofing?
We’re a fast-growing roofing company in Austin, Texas, that specializes in high-end residential and commercial roofing. We focus on the little things and those things compounding. Specialty roofing systems: synthetic cedar shake roofs, tile, slate, and standing seam. What sets us apart is literally focusing on those little things. I think we have become the most well-known roofing brand in Central Texas in a very short period of time. I think constant improvement as well as accountability to yourself and your team.
