Meet Jenny Reynolds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Reynolds.

Hi Jenny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been creative. As a kid, it was infinitely more fun to make something up than to do what I was told. I’ve always heard music and stories in my head. I started guitar lessons around five and it’s been a part of my life since then.

With a Master’s in Education, I became a high English teacher in the mid-90s. I’d begun writing my own music-playing shows in bars and church coffeehouses.

The release of my first record, Colored in Poetry, garnered a Boston Music Award nomination in 1999. Songs from it were placed on multiple soap operas from about 2000-2003. I left regular teaching to pursue music and switched to substitute teaching for the flexible schedule.

I moved to Austin in 2003 after touring there since 2000. Been in Austin ever since. I released Bet on the Wind in 2001 and Next to You in 2008. My new record, Any Kind of Angel, was released during the pandemic, June 2020.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My wife began a struggle with a rare neurological disease in 2008 called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. She had balance issues early on, began losing her motor skills in 2013, and passed away in 2017. I was her caretaker until May of 2016 when I had to put her in a nursing home. Everything in our lives stopped from about 2013 to 2017.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for being as strong a musician and guitarist as I am a songwriter who has gotten some music on television.

Also, I’m known in Austin for producing Williams Nite: A Tribute to Hank and Lucinda Williams. It’s a mostly annual show that raises money for The SIMS Foundation.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Work hard. Be kind to everyone. Keep moving and learning.
